We manage short term holiday homes in Cape Town and want to give holidaymakers 1 to two gigs during their stay. They must be able to top at at their own cost if they need more. I am looking at the entry level costs to do this. Although the differences in costs are not a train smash I would like to ask you for advice.

Looking at the rates here and top up cost Axxess looks like a better deal than Afrihost mobile data top up.

It looks like Axxess is cheaper on the entry level and Afrihost cheaper on the high end.
Am I missing something?

Customer service?
Ease of top up?
etc..

They both use exactly the same network, so the difference is going to be in how the packages are billed, roll-over, out-of-bundle charges, etc.

Both Axxess and Afrihost requires the account holder to RICA the SIM card, so it will be in your name, and not the guest's. And the only way to top-up is via the ClientZone. Do you really want to give your guests access to the ClientZone and to a SIM that is RICAd in your name? If so, I think its a bad idea.

Another problem I see is that with both Axxess and Afrihost, they are month-to-month accounts. So you will be paying for the gigs perpetually until you decide to cancel. What happens if you get guests who don't use/need/want the data, or if there are periods when your properties are vacant? You'll be paying for something that goes unused and will be lost. With Axxess your data rolls over, so that might be less of an issue.

I think you need to look for another solution.

Axxess in my experience. Their customer service lacks in some instances. But their prices and network quality make up for it.

Hi Saajid thanks. I will do the top up. If a guest pays R10000 to stay R200 is nothing. In other words if I have to pay R200 to get a deal of R10000 then I am willing :)

Long-term data package is the best in your case.
Check your Telkom coverage. They still have prepaid 60+60GB TM-only package R1800, valid for one year. Get right router, so you can allocate quota to each customer.

One warning: http://onnet.8ta.com allows to access your account information without password. You have to block on the router access to this site.

@sajunky thanks. You are very helpful. I am impressed.

I did not even know such a router existed. I was aware of the 8ta deal but left it alone.

I'll guide into some options drop me pm later so I don't forget

I couldn't complain about the Afrihost mobile data APN I had with them. I moved to Axxess's APN from 1 December but have not been able to test it since there are issues provisioning my SIM with them.

I'm having this same issue and support are completely useless. I signed up on the 25th and my SIM was "provisioned" the same day. Still not working. Really regretting switching.

Just log a ticket, it takes a while to get right.

Mine started working this afternoon when they got AH to release my number and they were able to provision it on the MTN network for the Axxess APN.

Also, the Axxess support lady here is helpful

So I can cancel my Afrihost and move over to axxess, using the same SIM? Am planning todo so soon as I really need the rollover feature!

Hi blaaislaai,

As long as that SIM is your existing MTN Post Billed Contract SIM, then we can move the service over to Axxess. If you bought a SIM from Afrihost then we will suggest you rather get a new SIM from Axxess.
