Afrihost vs Axxess Mobile Data

+1 (provided you have a good Telkom Mobile signal there.)

Yes get a cheap prepaid sim load it with some cheap airtime and test.

If the signal is good then there we have it!

I couldn't complain about the Afrihost mobile data APN I had with them. I moved to Axxess's APN from 1 December but have not been able to test it since there are issues provisioning my SIM with them.

I'm having this same issue and support are completely useless. I signed up on the 25th and my SIM was "provisioned" the same day. Still not working. Really regretting switching.

Really struggling with Axxess!
I was on AH for a short while last year, signed up now with Axxess on 17th Nov (existing MTN sim).

I'm on day 16, no connection (never worked), they hardly respond, keep going around in circles. I was going to get another account on a new sim, but with their service levels, I think I'll regret it, even if that one actually works.

Hi elysian, we have sent you an email. We will assist you to get this sorted asap.

Hi,

Thanks, I received your email and responded with my story, which you should have received before you posted this.

I have however just cancelled the service, as I have already spent quite a bit phoning your support and paying for OOB data while waiting for the imminent service. I have had to buy data bundles now from MTN anyway, so I won't be needing all the Axxess data that has been accumulating and rolling over (which is great BTW) for the last 17 days since signing up.

Pity. But at least your accounts department said they will refund me.

created account with axxess this afternoon.(I have cancelled afrihost)
Account activated and I applied new APN. What a pleasure this change over was..!

Thank you axxess..! well done.

BUT I CANNOT CONNECT.... ! Been phoning Axxess, just been told to wait for activation.
I am using the Sim that I got with afrihost....!

WTF, It is 25th and I still cant get Axxess internet access. But I have already been billed and paid for data that is just lying there. What a stealer..!
I thought AH was pathetic..!

At least at afrihost I knew I got shabby internet, but I have never been 7 days without internet connection. Maybe better to sleep with the devil you know then the make a new bed with one that you dont know and have a few more tricks up his sleeve.

also been send the axxesslady 2 PM's last couple of days, but frankly no answer yet. So that the reason me ranting here, because I tried everything with axxess to no avail...!!!

AXXESS you want business or not.. If you do, you better start delivering

Hi blaaislaai,

As long as that SIM is your existing MTN Post Billed Contract SIM, then we can move the service over to Axxess. If you bought a SIM from Afrihost then we will suggest you rather get a new SIM from Axxess.

May also put this up on your bloody internet site, where we ordered new accounts from Axxess, after deciding AH just sucks and thought there were a better service provider. Maybe then I could have ordered a new sim also from day one and just maybe maybe I would have had access by now.

(send from my work computor)

Afrihost will only release your sim from the APN when they cancel, which is end of the month.
Only then Axxess can provision you as you cannot be provisioned to Axxess and AH at the same time.

They probably should add it to their site. Your AH should still be working, it only stops on the midnight on the 31st (or 10pm as they like to cut you off early)

Thank you kindly WhatWhat, for that info. First proper bit of info. would have been nice to get feedback from axxess in first place, then this rant was not even necessary.

as I did not get any help from Axxess, I just re-activated my afrihost account. problem is my afrihost account is not working anymore for couple days now. Maybe re-activation of my account at Afrihost might start AH service (internet access) again. So it seems I am screwed a bit by both service providers.

Cant find the place on axxess site to cancel axxess.

So bloody frustrated that I have to sit at work to be able to get internet access...!

and yes, this fact should be clearly visible on AXXESS site, where you sign on for axxess contract, that when using an afrihost sim, you will not be able to connect to Axxess, until it has been released by Afrihost. Axxess is thus in fact stealing to have me pay for something that I cannot use (I know the portion I paid for will roll over to next month.) Still if I knew this, I would have only signed on with Axxess on 1st January, when my contract would have ended with afrihost and the sim would be released.

anyone know where on Axxess user control panel you can cancel Axxess contract. Cant seem to find it..!

Rather just stick to Axxess and wait it out. The rollover and cheaper prices (for now) make it a better product than Afrihost.

Afrihost is MTN and Axxess is MTN. What's going to be the benefit? It's the same incompetent MD Provider.

I signed up with Axxess and provisioned my Afrihost sim after after receiving directions from the Axxess call centre. Was told to phone Afrihost and have them unprovision the sim from their side, of which they did. Called Axxess thereafter only to informed by another agent that I cannot use the Afrihost sim because it is not a post paid sim and it will not work. She informed me that I need to order a sim from Axxess, which I did. Note that after I signed up in the morning, no payment went through. After I ordered the sim from them, 2 payments went through at the same time. Not cool.

I signed up with axxess and cancelled my Afrihost in December. Both apns were working fine in December but as of 1 January my Axxess apn stopped working and axxess support is totally useless in fixing the problem. 3 Days later after I submitted a support ticket its still not working. All I get in response by them is to make sure my apn is set to "axxess" . I got the the same response 3 times. I hope the axxess lady here can sort out my problem. The axxess apn is provisioned on my mtn contract sim.

So I have an existing Afrihost account on a mtn contract sim and was thinking of switching to axxess but reading through this thread makes me think this is not such a good idea.

I had a similar experience. Cancelled my Afrihost mobile services (mifi and iPad with Afrihost sims) in mid-December. Ordered Axxess services using the existing Afrihost sim numbers for 01 January start. Got the "Afrihost sims don't work on Axxess" message from Axxess tech support. Ordered new services with sims. Next day, I get emails from Axxess saying my Afrihost sims are provisioned. Phoned to cancel the second order, and got a variation of the Afrihost sim story - to the effect that they can provision the Afrihost sim, but you get no throughput.
Meanwhile my son also moves his mifi from Afrihost to Axxess, keeps his Afrihost sim. It works, no problem.

Now today though, I'm trying to connect my gaming desktop using the mifi, It's a Sunday morning, how busy can the network be, right? But I'm getting crazy erratic pings from 35ms (to www.axxess.co.za, some of the time) up to over a second - well over. Five bars of signal on the mifi, sitting less than a metre away from the DWA-125 AP on the desktop. Looks like the MTN mobile network is overloaded? Or at least the base station I'm connecting to? Any way to narrow down the cause(s) of the bad performance?

Have also been looking to move from Afrihost to Axxess to get the benefit of cheaper mobile data and roll-over, but reading through this thread...not so sure anymore. Will most likely go with TM then

We manage short term holiday homes in Cape Town and want to give holidaymakers 1 to two gigs during their stay. They must be able to top at at their own cost if they need more. I am looking at the entry level costs to do this. Although the differences in costs are not a train smash I would like to ask you for advice.

Looking at the rates here and top up cost Axxess looks like a better deal than Afrihost mobile data top up.

It looks like Axxess is cheaper on the entry level and Afrihost cheaper on the high end.
Am I missing something?

Customer service?
Ease of top up?
etc..

The best solution might be to purchase a few MiFi devices which you can RICA in your name and then issue to guests (or you could just purchase the SIMs (though it may not fit all devices - you can get a converter).

You can also include Afrihost Plus membership to give them 2 for 1 topups and also double data on the packages (and an additional free 500MB of Mobile data).
