Hey everyone,

I'm looking at a new ISP for Nov, currently I'm on a 2 Mbps line but will likely upgrade to 4 Mb shortly.
At the moment I'm trying to choose between

WAHome 2 Mb Uncapped - R239 pm
Afrihost 2 Mb Uncapped - R297 pm
Openweb Gold Uncapped (Leon Edition) - R299

Over the last 3 months I've been averaging 210 Gb per month and so I like to believe I should be okay with regards to usage on any of these accounts. What I'd like to know from all of you are how you guys feel about the packages with regards to intl gaming (League of Legends EU West mainly), Downloading (torrents + newshosts), streaming (youtube + twitch) and obviously how the shaping is like during the business day.

Thanks for any Feedback

Anyone know the specific differences between the different gold options at Openweb?

Gold Uncapped ADSL - R398
Gold Leon Edition - R299
Gold Orange edition - R349

Maybe go for the 2mb afrihost business account. Including adsl line rental it is R597. I consume roughly the same data a month and had no issues so far.

NEVER EVER GIVE YOUR LINE RENTAL TO AN ISP. WHY? WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU WANT TO CHANGE ISPs? KEEP YOUR LINE RENTAL UNDER YOUR OWN NAME.

Right, now that is out of the way.

Openweb > all. You get what you pay for, don't forget that.

Also, OW is primarily IS backbone and not MTN, but you can get on the MTN backbone if you reeeeealy want to. OW also don't care how much you use. There is no star rating system *cough cough afrihost webafrica cough*. If the network is busy it slows for P2P and NNTP traffic (hardly ever during unshaped hours, unless a new Grand Theft Auto linux distro is released), but HTTP and video streaming are always top priority. OW doesn't punish you for using an uncapped account like an uncapped account.

Different contention ratios and what position you are in when they unshape different parts of the network. I'm currently on Orange 4meg and I get unshaped from 5PM to 8.30AM weekdays and on weekends and public holidays I'm completely unshaped. Leon unshapes around 6PM I think.

Same here, Afrihost all the way.

Openweb gets a lot of praise around here, so I gave them a go a few months ago as well. The packages is unnecessarily confusing, felt like dealing with a 1 man operation, the usage control panel looks like a remnant from the start of the internet and the full month notice period just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Also gave OpenWeb a go.Started all good but the line speed drop more and more. International games started lagging, had to contact them twice about the issue. Youtube are shaped and games update at 40-50kbs on 1mb line. Moving to Afrihost next month.

If those are your options definitely Openweb GOLD.

Take the most expensive GOLD option you can afford.

Openweb Gold:

Shaped during daytime / Unshaped from 5pm to 8am on weekdays / Unshaped 24/7 on weekends

Afrihost Business:

Unshaped 24/7

Make your choice based on your actual needs.

MWEB:

WTF! Forget it unless you are a hardcore masochist/retarded.

Go for Afrihost Business if you can afford it. Openweb is ok, but Gold is not worth the money. I have a gamers account, and I get decent speeds after hours.

Ag I mean Afrihost have that thing in their control panel so you can see your priority on the network based on how much you have downloaded, don't they? I remember seeing screen-shots of it.

If not then I'm mistaken about afrihost. Mybad.

With regard to the ADSL bundles that OW is going to be selling - give the consumer what they want. If they want to save a couple bucks per month on rental and trust their ISP with their line rental then go for it. I certainly don't trust any ISP with my line rental. Not even OW.

GOLD is definitely worth it. You get decent speeds during the day too.
