Hey guys,

I am cancelling my Telkom offering this month in order to pursue the Afrihost 5GB option for R145.

before I do could you please give me a little insight into the following:
- Latency on gaming specifically, will it be better/same?
- I am on a 384 line what will my total cost come to now that i cancelled my Telkom deal? Is it Line rental + R145?

Can anyone help before i take the leap, please?

Thank you!

Gaming is impossible on these new cheap accounts...
I used to have a 40ms ping with WebAfrica 10GB Shaped, moved over, and it's now sitting at 400ms ping with AfriHost.
Really not a gaming account, rather go unshaped with WA if you want a gaming account.
Also keep in mind, these R29 adsl accounts aren't forever, it's just a trial...

Not

I would disagree with you on this point, i use Telkom, Axxess & Afrihost i have a 4MG line and host for the guys with no issue!!!!! on all account so i dont see a difference

Not so sure about that. Mine seems the same as any other IS account from any other ISP... The R 29 is a trial - but whatever cap you choose now will always be provided at R 29 /GB. The upgrades may be more. Excellent value!

Thank you all for your input. I think I am still going to go with Afrihost, if I have issues might as well go up to a 4mb line...

I'm getting 320ms tot World of warcraft EU so i'm smiling :)

Hey Joe

If you have any queries. Feel free to mail me and I will be more than happy to answer any questions you have. And if I don't know I have the best bunch of tech gurus to ask.

Btw best choice, but I am slightly biased. ;)

I see the T&Cs talk about hosting. What's that about?

T&Cs

I see the T&Cs talk about hosting. What's that about?

Afrihost is primarily a WebHosting provider and their terms and conditions cover both areas of their business (ADSL & WebHosting)
I guess it is just safer to have one version than two different ones that may land up with the wrong user.

but what does that mean if i do not want to host? is there some cost that will hit me later on making the R29/Gb or whatever it is now not quite that?

Hey

We are currently using the terms and conditions of the hosting to cover everything. However Gian and myself are reworking the terms and conditions for the Broadband side.

With regards the R29 p/m per GB if you sign up on any of our packages at that price, you will be locked in FOREVER! That is part of the deal and part of our initial advertising campaign. However once the deal expires, I am unaware when that will be then if you upgrade or downgrade to another option you will not get the R29 per GB deal.

Example. You buy 1 GB at R29 per month. You decide now, that you want the 2Gb for R58 per month while the deal is going you are still locked in forever. However if you decide after the deal to go for the 2Gb you will then pay a higher fee.

I hope this makes sense and once again email me if you need further clarification.

Cheers.

Do Afrihost use soft cap?

For example when I use Openweb i buy a 1 gig International / 1 gig Local, but they don't cap me after the 1 gig and i can use the local for international use as well.

This for R65 semi shape, thus it comes to R32.50 per gig and thats for semi -shape?

Hey

Last month we did soft cap (but that was in error). So this month we will be instituting hard cap.

We blend our bandwidth so there is no difference between the bandwidth you use.

Keep well.

just 1 spanner to throw into the plan:

-say a person is on a 10GB account, for R290.
-after the special ends, he wants to downgrade to 8GB.
if you are charging say R39 per GB that time, that would work out to R312.
if you charge R45 per GB, it would then cost R360

now my question - if a person wanted to downgrade, would your staff tell the person he would be paying more, while chucking 2 Gigs down the drain?

because I can see a lot of n00bs not knowing the special ended and complaining on hellopeter/etc if they accidentally do this :p

just throwing it out there :D

Thanks for the that. I am sure that the support staff would explain... (if not I am going to take a hammer and ... well you get the idea) No client will get screwed over. It isnt the way we work. But yeah I will be speaking to Gian about this. have a meeting with him tomorrow and this will get discussed.

However if the client does downgrade in clientzone (which we try to get all of our clients to do) they will see the updated price before they downgrade or upgrade.

Thought so, thus R29 per gig is not that cheap, I pay R189 for a 3gig International and 3 gig Local, but use almost "6gig" for international every month.

This comes to R31.50 a gig (semi shaped)

So until Openweb starts to hardcap i will stay with them.

Shared bandwidth pools are fine and all but I don't count them into my International bandwidth - it's not guaranteed to be there tomorrow

Agree, but for now i will stick to openweb till they stop the bandwidth pools.

I'm in the market for ADSL soon, decided Im getting a cybersmart account, with Nightrider you get a theoretical 15Gb (if used wisely) and I heard ping times aint to bad.
