All things Shelly

The thing with Shellies is, that you do not need to flash their firmware to disconnect them from the cloud. That's right, out of the box it has a setting to disconnect from the shelly cloud. That there alone makes it perfect to not worry about the longevity of the company at all.

And that is also how I run mine. They are all disconnected from the cloud automatically by just enabling MQTT, which can then integrate with any local LAN home automation software you prefer. Mine ofcoarse is Home Assistant.

As for the wifi being down. For me that just is not an option with both me and wife working from home. So we have a solar setup, but on top of that, the network equipment also have a small 600w inverter backup, so that if the house's earth leakage trip (and it happen more than you know/expect), the house can go down but the wifi and internet stays up! In fact, I would say this is something you should plan for right now. With home automation, the wifi is super duper important and you should run it like it is part of a business.

That said, the shellies for me in this setup, has been super reliable, they are basically the most stable component in my whole home automation eco system. I only tinkered with them when I installed them in 2020. From there I only added auto firmware updates through Home Assistant and basically forgot about them.

The sonoffs, even with tasmota flashed have had their fair share of problems, losing wifi config etc. Although I rate more stable than people still using ewelink. Zigbee, my setup aint bad but the experience is far from ideal.

Thats my 2c :p
Thanks Tinavu

The plan is to install hybrid solar in the home and to take this into account.
Great to hear about the reliability, I am also planning to run the system using HA.

I was actually thinking of disabling auto firmware update just to ensure it stays rock solid, sometimes these updates seem to break things

Also, biggest thing is to have proper wifi coverage with decent equipment. Not a big fan of cheap switches/wifi ap's as they always tend to give problems. I run complete unifi setup with ap's, switches, cameras and usg. Everything is extremely stable and no wifi issues at all. Currently sitting with 43 wifi device over 3 ap's and they just work without any issue.

I do have a shelly dimmer in the mix, only issue I have is that the lights would have a flicker every now and then for less than a second. From reading up about this, seems like it depends on the bulb used as well. Haven't been able to solve it, which tells me it might be the bulb.
Yip completely agree, I am running a ton of CAT6 points through the house and aiming for 5 APs (Unifi). My plan is to sense check the bulbs as well before buying the lot to hopefully get around that problem.

Do you know if the dimmer issues with bulbs only relates to Shelly Dimmers or dimmer modules in general?

I have to sonoff dimmers in the cupboard.... tried to flash esphome on them and now they won't start. Can still flash firmware, but nothing else works. Most of my smart devices is sonoff with esphome, Unfortunately those are the only 2 I know that works with home assistant if you going that route.

I've got a few Shelly 1 and Dimmer 2

Keep in mind three things :
  1. Shelly 1/1PM/2.5 all need a neutral cable
  2. Shelly Dimmer 2 can be installed with, or without neutral
  3. Shelly Bypass may be needed for for a no neutral installation if the load is too small
I doubt the company would disappear - it's part of a far larger holding company and Shelly is one of the fastest growing IoT brands out now. But regarding the reason for the question, I don't use HA - but I can still do direct-to-device communication where there is no break out and local support.

I had the flashing at very low levels as mentioned above, but I bought dimmable bulbs and no such issue anymore . The Dimmer and Shelly 1 are rock solid .

This is really good news around stability! I have already asked the electrician to quote that neutral wires need to be pulled through to all light switches. This way the house is future proof in case I have another product that wants a neutral wire.

With my current Shelly Dimmer 2 I feel like the dimming is not smooth in the way it dims, when I push the light switch it has a short delay on the physical button and then seems to go from bright to quite dim and then fades out. It has not got a uniform dimming feel if that makes sense. What has your experience been?

I'll try get a photo / video this evening for you .

I mostly use the dimmer for schedules though

If you have a bunch of Shelly’s and Homebridge and really wanna stuff up your life, get your router taken out by lightning and the new one dishes out new IPs to the Shelly’s.

My HomeKit is a dogs breakfast…half don’t work. The other half come on but won’t turn off

I'm looking at putting in Shelly Dimmer2 relays to control my 220V lights controlled by a bell-press switch. In a traditional write-up (without the Shelly), I would need a dimmer module behind the switch. Does the Shelly replace the need for this, or do I need the Shelly Dimmer2 AND the traditional dimmer still wired inline as well?

Shelly dimmer2 replace that dimmer module.

Sun Power took my Geyser with 1PM connected to a whole new level today:

How do you measure the temperature of the Geyser water?
Shelly 1PM with Temperature Probe Add-On - The geyser has an extra slot for an additional Probe which I just slid it down in

Is the extra slot part of the element? I'm trying to figure out how to get a probe in mine, as the thermostat pocket is very narrow and I can't get it in as well as the thermostat.

My Geyser has an extra empty slot for an additional thermostat...

Anyone else have a issue where She’ll 1PM relays are getting stuck in an on state? I have two lights in my house where the relays would occasionally get stuck in a on state until I tap the relay.

I have some Shelly DUO GU10 smart bulbs that have all started to report energy consumption as 0W even when on. Is there any way of correcting this?

If it's more than one - maybe FW or something ?

I'd open a ticket with Shelly direct first

Thanks, I did. They were surprisingly quick to respond. The solution was to go into each bulb's settings and reselect the device model i.e. 4.5W GU10, then the bulbs started showing the consumption again
