Maybe silly question, if I switch the ac db to Eskom, in theory the inverter is then bypassed from the home, so any solar generated should go directly into the batteries?

Would it still draw from eskom if it needed grid charge?

Basically thinking of forcing the inverter to use full charge from the sun to get batteries to 100% and balance.
Makes no sense to me. The net effect is the same.

Grid charging is not the goal, the goal is to isolate the system until it is at max and the bms have settled.

Do you have issues with your batteries that you want to do this? I don't recall you posting anything recently regarding that.

Yes. It was a few posts back, I've got a voltage drift to my SOC. Pretty much most folks say to re-align it needs a full max charge to force the bms to kick in and stabilize. Supposedly, they only really balance properly at over 53V.

Or so I'm being told , so going to give it shot.
 
It's what the brochure says. Your installer may have additional information as to whether it is accurate or not, I assume that he is experienced in the Volta battery? May be wise to give him a call first and confirm.
Discharging and charging at a lower rate is better for the battery's longevity and he may have set it up that way for this reason. On the other hand, if it really is 1C and you've paid for it, then it ought to be able to do it, and it's pretty pointless to have a solution that cannot boil a kettle. Just check the warranty terms and conditions as well.
And don't assume the installer installed thick enough cable... Rather double check and ask him if the battery cable can handle 100A before you set it... As @Speedster said, make sure battery BMS cable is properly installed so battery can tell inverter what it's capable of.

My installer also installed an additional change over switch to isolate the complete DC system from the house.
The main reason: should the inverter fail for whatever reason, I can instantly switch the complete house back to grid until any problems are resolved.
No need to get the wiring changed.
 
Set priority to battery?
My system is a rental so everytime I need to change settings I got to call and have them do it. They respond well and quickly, it's just annoying. My thoughts are this is a easier way to have the same effect.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but while that will prioritize the battery, once soc is at a 100%, it will start using the battery for loads again? I want to ensure the batteries float long enough to give it time to sort out any balancing issues.

From what I've been reading around, this should work as I expect so going to give it a go today as there is a large enough gap in our ls schedule to not need the battery and in theory I sacrifice a bit of solar power but not really as I will use the batteries charge later regardless.

If on prioritize battery, battery will get benefit over load if available solar. If battery soc settimg is lower than the current available soc, battery will still discharge into load but be the first to receive once solar is sufficient?

You will probably have to use that changeover to achieve what you want.

You can set your system to 100% soc on the workscreens, tick all the grid charge checkboxes as well. Maybe do prioritize battery as others have suggested.

The problem is that as soon as the grid is gone then the battery will be used to power the inverter and any load still connected. So hopefully you have enough sun on that day.

I'm not sure how long you need to keep your batteries at 100% to get the balancing that you want.

Me neither. I just want to make sure that the batteries get full charge a few times which should be fine if the batteries are first to prevent my burst loads in the morning from charging /discharging the battery to SOC. It might be the better winter setting for me vs load first if this battery drift is a permanent thing but hopefully this full charge will sort it out and I'll reverse back to load first at a later stage or when production returns back to March levels at least..
 
Well batteries are force charging now as well as the priorise so lets see what happens with this drift.

Why would you need a changeover switch if you connect a generator to a Sunsynk? Mine has a dedicated generator connection and setting to allow me to tell the inverter how much power it can take from the generator. It is simply just another input into the inverter and can be used at the same time as the grid, solar and battery . No need for a changeover switch.

Personally I'd always want something to isolate a feed prior to the inverter so maintenance can take place or be swopped out.

Well in the case of a generator you simply switch it off. Same as an isolator.

But if you have a "hot" generator ie: triggered by the inverter though a signal to start, would it not be wiser to have that? Also from most installations that I've seen, the generators spin up and stabilize prior and then switch ( like 30s ) but maybe the inverter can do this as well?

I dunno, just I would like a isolator personally, being pedantic, full changeover dunno.

Oh, and also what about a genie test scenario? I know if we did a weekly/monthly maintenance test, we never wanted any output etc to go near so we were able to switch it that it would be isolated from the rest of the db and the generator could be started and run/revved without impacting anything. Thats in a more traditional generator/mains config, not genrator/inverter/mains.

Interesting that the batteries are on 90% but the voltage is well down from the other day at the same level

Is anyone running a long cable from the RS485 port on the inverter to their Pi/NUC/whatever else? Any issues with the comms?

I'm going to go the kellerza Home Assistant addon route and my HA machine will be 9 metres away from the inverter. A quick Google shows RS485 upto 12m is fine with no drop in speed. I got this adaptor to use with it:
With a GND you should have no issues. Keep the Data on a twisted pair and try not to route it with you other AC/DC wires.
