Altech Cellular launches Mobile Chat

Ok, i assume the emphasis here is on "first local multi protocol messenger" . Because it sounds pretty much like Fring [www.fring.com] , which supports Google+MSN+Skype+Fring itself [even though it's advertised as a VOIP app it is infact a normal chat client too]...

Diabolus : Oh, your must mean Fring, that solution that supports almost no phones. Hell, they dont even support Samsung, SA most popular high end phone brand. Why, they dont even support 1st and 2nd place high end phone brands in the world (Moto and Samsung). Glad to see Nokia is producing some phones, in the N series, that is finally getting them some traction in the high end market, but if Fring wants to succeed, they need to support more phones.

That being said, I have no idea what this Altech solution supports

Or even Talkonaut ( www.talkonaut.com ) which supports GTalk, MSN, AIM, Yahoo, etc,etc... Guess things are slowly moving up...

Actuall my mxit account is multiplatform.
I regularly chat using gtalk to ppl using mxit.

I call their bollocks and raise them to horse manure proclamation status.

If it was free it would be great but @ R20/month it s a clear rip off. This is a problem with big South African companies who feel that charging for stuff is a better way to go than giving it away as a marketing effort. Good will is an amazing sales tool.

So where do we sign up

Great they launched this, but where do we get it? Checked their web page, found nothing.

As armitage mentioned - mxit is multi platform, and free, at least for 1 - on - 1 chats. It also supports the Jabber protocol and has an MSN gateway. Although I must admit my experiences using the MSN gateway are poor. Jabber works great through!

So why should I pay for something I cat get for free? Weird...

I hate it when people tell you they have launched something, but then tell you nothing about where to get it...

Like MTN launched PTT, but do they tell you how to sign up??? No!

They say you must SMS the word "Mobile Chat" to 31608, but when you do that, you get an error message stating that the keyword is not recognized on their system.

I think it should be one word - "Mobilechat"

And as far as I know, they are only launching this on Monday...

Messed around a bit - Send chat to 31608 and away you go. Works great on my Sony Ericsson.

ROFL...... You actually paid R20 for such mobile application software when you can download MXIT free of charge from your Mobile phone @
Code:
http://www.mxit.co.za/wap

What autopage should of done is it give it free of charge to AutoPage customers..

Please do submit some screen shots of the application :)
If you've a digital Camera :)

Would love to see the shots

there's that IM protocoll thing that's used on sony ericsson's and motorolla (I think both). Anyways... that's an open protocoll which can be used by anyone. And the best part is, it does everything this stuff does... for free.
There's so many things out there that does this. For free.

This stuff is just another sms/mobile money scam like the porn adds on tv.

They are probably using OpenFire as server, which is free, and have gateways to all other jabber servers (g-talk, msn, mxit, etc).

A very good mobile client is Bombus, and can connect to any jabber server.

There are plenty of free solutions, even some forums have a jabber server as added service. Webafrica also hosts a jabber server, free to customers of webafrica.

So why pay, indeed.

let me see should i use mxit (which is free) or pay R20 a month?

i guess free it is!
