Am I being crazy for declining this offer?

So I have been job hunting for a while, I have been with my current company since 2011 and looking for greener pastures and a better salary. I mean I'm only 25. Anyway, so I went for an interview at Multichoice last week and today they contacted me with an offer. At the current company I'm at I hold a junior software developer role, it's a full-time job and I get a gross salary of R12.5k, my company pays half of my medical aid, no pension fund so at the end of the day I go home with about R10k. Now MC is offering me R16.5k, mind you it's a contract job with a possibility of being made permanent after one year. Since it's a contract job they are not offering any benefits, so I will have to pay my full medical aid, which in total it's R4742. After that and my tax I think I will be left with roughly R10k. Which is the same with where I am now. Am I crazy for thinking of declining this offer?

I am looking for career advise and I know myBB people are smart and give sound advice. I would really appreciate your help.

When you lay your salary on the table with a prospective employer... Be sure to put your total cost to company including their portion of Pension / Medical / guaranteed 13th cheques. Also include anything that is included eg. Free Lunch or Parking. Even the fact that you may have to buy a suit or 3 in order to go to work... Why? Because if you didn't move jobs, you wouldn't have to fork out 3-5k for clothes... Be open and honest, dont cook the numbers. Also take into account that you may sacrifice your nextx increase as you may not be at the new company for the required time. Same goes for any bonus. There are more things to consider... but look at the big picture...

And if they aren't willing to offer you enough to move then:
1) You aren't worth it - experience? Skillset?
2) They want to pay peanuts as juniors are easy to come by.

And lastly there is no harm in negotiating...

After seeing what people are paying, I feel anally raped with a cactus. I will ask for advise about the medical aid.

My payslip shows all of that and I sent them an email explaining all of that when they asked.
 
The problem I see is lack of experience. Not saying you aren't great at programming, but the employers look at years experience. If you have a portfolio with various things that you have done to prove your competency, then I feel it is a different matter.

Junior, if I remember correctly, is 0 - 3 years experience in a subject. Not collective experience in various subjects.

I started getting a lot more offers on linkedin when my experience went over 3 years.
 
I saw RSAWEB advertising some positions on here over the last couple of weeks. Do a bit of a search and find out from them whether they're still looking.

Who are you with?! I pay R1325 for a hospital plan...can go to any private hospital though, but still...I want to save...
 
nothing wrong with banks in fact if you get an offer there i say go for it! even if the offer works out to the same you are getting now.

depending on the position offered you likely to get 2% less prime on your vehicle and home loan plus they cover your medical aid or at the very least pay a portion. works out great in the long run - also you probably get a great package on your banking needs ie card, cheque all less than the normal rates

I'm currently working for one. Started as a contractor too. Two and a half years down the road and I haven't looked back since.

Ah damn it's not Standard Bank lol. Maybe I should send my CV there and see if I will get an interview with "he who shall not be named".
