So, after some more research I learned that Fiber will be exactly like the old nasty ADSL days, where Telkom owns the line and I HAVE to pay them to rent the line....:confused:
Then I can get my own ISP, and pay them to supply me with data.
Is this how it is, and am I overreacting a bit here, I just thought there would be a (much bigger) choice.

BTW I am in Mooikloof Ridge, PTA East

The POTS service is not mandatory as with ADSL.

You are able rent the line from many ISPs in the market. While the line is owned by Openserve (Telkom wholesale), you can receive one invoice for line & data from non-Telkom ISPs.

It depends on if you use Telkom or another fibre provider.

But I believe you can rent line directly from ISP on fibre
 
The big difference is that Telkom doesn't have the monopoly on the Fiber lines. Any company can install them and the ISP chooses who to use and who is available at a certain location, unlike ADSL where Telkom had a monopoly on the copper line running to your house

No I do not think you are alone. In the end it is very unlikely that more than one fibre supplier will lay FTTH in an area in general. So IF Telkom gets there first, they will be the suppliers of the infrastructure and if DFA or any other fibre infrastructure supplier gets there first it will be them. The choice is still really only on the ISP side.

In the case of copper lines, Telkom was the supplier everywhere. Even though others have had the right to also deploy copper for a few years, no other supplier was interested in doing so (frankly, it made no technical or business sense for anyone to deploy copper lines).

I would have no issues with Telkom being the FTTH supplier, and I would prefer to deal with Telkom direct for my fibre connection iso dealing with a specific ISP. ISPs come and go, and, seeing the hassles experienced by others trying to migrate their ADSL connections to other operators, I will much rather do so.

And BTW, having a fixed line telephone service is also a great service !

You'll likely only have a single fibre provider in your road. The market is in a land-grab right now, where companies are fighting to get into the areas most likely to be profitable. Once the line is in, it's much less likely another company will wire up your road because they'd be better served by going into un-wired areas. So you'll most likely have to deal with whoever gets there first (Telkom or another fibre provider). This may change over time but it'll be many years away before it's common to have multiple fibre providers on a road.

However you won't have to deal with them directly. In most cases you can deal with any of a set of ISP's who can sell you data on top of the fibre and who will package it up as a single product (so you only pay the ISP). And as others have said, no phone line requirement. I'm personally super pleased about that. Stupid Telkom and their stupid valueless mandatory phone rental which was forced on us only because they never had to compete.
 
Telkom fibre is no better than copper. It also runs through IPC.

Cost. 3x as much as international transit...
Speed of provisioning. Isps wait weeks or months for much needed capacity increments

I am envious ...... I have to still wait a while ...... even worse considering that for a time I had a 1 and 10 Gbps (dedicated duplex, no contention) connection direct to my home under test ... Was a bit of a come down back to 2 Mbps ADSL .....

Very interested in a pic of the CPE that terminates the fibre in your home .....

(Especially how you are going to handle the engineering wire and what you are going to do to re lightning protection :wtf::twisted:;) )

Your install sounds way less interesting than mine. When the guys were here I had them tell me every single thing they did, documented it, and asked if they could even let me try doing the modem config so I knew how to fix it if it got factory reset...

Well the CPE on this side is managed by the fibre provider, so I won't do anything on it.
My router is ready to go. Just need to plug the CPE into a gig port... As simple as setting up an ethernet port as a DHCP client.

Can you get multiple 1Gs combined into a 10G link in, say, a month? :p

And you're not going to get pricing down for anyone without Telkom risking competition commission lawsuits from the usual suspects. Yes, IPC is very expensive and the cost has very little basis in what I can reconcile with reality, but it is a very good product being offered, that with just a little bit of work could be ideal for the future...

Not where it could be. Vumatel have locked my CPE to 100mb - waiting for CW's excellent support team to get them to sort it out :)
