We recently moved from Midrand to Helderkruin and now we are having troubles with our domestic who stays in Tembisa. We were tolerant with her arriving at work between 8:30-9am and leaving between 3-4pm.

Since we moved to Helderkruin she has been coming in at about 10am and leaves again at 4pm. She asked for an additional R800 increase of which we said we will give R300 more, she is now getting R280 per day.

According to her she get's up at 5am to be here at 10am which just sounds impossible. If she left at 6am that means 4 hours of traveling via taxi...

So I've been waiting a bit to see if she would start coming in again at 9am but doesn't look like it. Thinking of starting to give warnings now.

So am I unreasonable?

No. You are not unreasonable. She should be there by 7-8AM. You should never have allowed her to come in at 9AM to start with. You should have also not allowed yourself to be extorted into giving a raise.

If she's able to get her work done to your satisfaction in the time she is there it's not a problem, in my opinion. Pay her for the work she does, not the time spent doing it, as long as she's productive it's fine. In my opinion, obviously. I work flexitime time too.

:wtf: you're being unreasonable, what's with this outdated calvinist protestant work ethic bull****? Jeez.

Spot the millennial.

That's quite a change in travel distance. Quick Google Maps search using the respective centers of Tembisa, Midrand and Helderkruin points to a leap from 14 km to 50+ km (depending on route).

Doesn't okay late arrivals, but that's quite a change.

I'd guess in a car that could take you at least 1.5 hours in peak traffic, especially if you have to negotiate the N1. 4-hours sounds extreme though.

:crylaugh::crylaugh:

Or wait no.... you serious?

Hang on, let me go check this with my boss.... surely these calvinistic capitalists can't expect this from me right? I mean, the nerve of it all... work hours and, uhhh, stuff....

Nope, sarcasm :crylaugh:

The way I see it, this is a problem that you created. You should always address issues like this immediately, don't play this wait and see game. You've given your employee the impression that her working hours flexible.

What is she supposed to do that should keep her at your place 8 hours a day. If she does what she's supposed to do why is there an issue about what time she leaves. Either reach a compromise or make clear your expectations of what her work hours should be. If she doesn't want to or can't stick to those hours then follow the correct procedures when terminating her employment.

It's a damn 30km extra that she has to travel. By law, if you company moves offices, they HAVE to adjust your salary to cater for the extra travel costs. It'll take more than R300 to travel that distance a week if you're in a car. You're also excluding the extreme inconvenience of her having to wake up an hour earlier to catch an earlier bus etc in your thoughts.

The safer thing to do is to is to find her a job closer to her side of town, and get a cleaning lady that lives closer to you.

You're being unreasonable.

Thembisa is basically next to Midrand and Roodepoort is very far away from there, I can easily see a commute via taxi taking so long, what did you expect OP?

For perspective:

4 hours by taxi, easy.

Tembisa>Midrand>Cresta>Roodeport>Heldekruin

Didn't realise that her commute is that much further. If that is the case then you're right, the OP is being unreasonable.

Commuting from Tembisa to Heldekruin will need her to take 4 taxis... First taxi will be a local taxi to the taxi rank in Tembisa, from the taxi rank she will have to take a taxi to JHB CBD... From there she will need to take a taxi to Roodepoort CBD and there she will get a taxi to Heldekruin... All that travel will take between 3-4 hours... If you need her to get to work at 7am that will mean she will need to leave home at 3am (some areas there aren't any taxis at that time)...

:wtf::wtf::wtf:
