I'd say, tell her you're paying her per hour. Say if she is getting R40 per hour - that includes paying her for lunchtime, and R280 per day at 09:00 - 16:00 work hours. If she gets there 1 hour late, give her R240.

We have a lady who started working here in September, she travels from Meyerton via taxi from around 05:30 and she's here by 8 every day, so I don't think your maid's excuse that it takes her 4 hours to get there, holds any water tbh, unless she insists on taking a friend's taxi who drives 20KM/h all the way.

You don't understand, hopping into a single taxi to your 50km destination and needing to take 4 taxis to get to the your destination 50km away is not the same thing.

It's a damn 30km extra that she has to travel. By law, if you company moves offices, they HAVE to adjust your salary to cater for the extra travel costs. It'll take more than R300 to travel that distance a week if you're in a car. You're also excluding the extreme inconvenience of her having to wake up an hour earlier to catch an earlier bus etc in your thoughts.

The safer thing to do is to is to find her a job closer to her side of town, and get a cleaning lady that lives closer to you.

You're being unreasonable.

Agreed, I think the author is getting confused between having to negotiate / consultations when offices are moved and revising contracts if your place of work is contracted. A salary increase is not a legislated outcome.

Our domestic comes in at 10h30 every day, she has been doing this for years. We just accept it. She does a reasonable job and follows instructions

Imagine how late domestic workers would be if taxis did not drive in the emergency lanes, onto oncoming traffic or skipping red traffic lights to get our workers where they need to be earlier...

It takes longer to hop from one taxi to the next. Sometimes one has to walk a but of a distance to catch a connecting taxi. It probably just 2 taxis on a freeway for your domestic helper while it takes about 4 or 5 and a bit of walking for oober's.

Yes, if it takes her that long to get there. The people saying that their company doesn't care about how they get there on time would sing a different tune if their company moved. You have to be willing to renegotiate employment conditions to compensate if doing so as it wasn't an original factor in considering taking the job. This is quite an exceptional circumstance as the areas you mention are also heavily congested and it likely costs a lot more than what you're paying her extra. If you can't come to a reasonable compromise you'd have to start the retrenchment process and pay her accordingly as well as UIF.

And that's if the taxi travels straight, from point to point. Don't forget the other commuters in the taxi. So stop and pick up and drop and pickup and drop....etc etc. Zig zag. It's bound to take longer, don't see why OP expect her to come in quicker.

Guilt free exploitation of the poor like this is so entrenched in our behaviour in South Africa. Most of us don't even realise how fortunate we are that we can afford to have full time domestic workers and nannies. One of the joys of colonialism we still get to enjoy here.

Try to find a full time maid or nanny "legally" for even R15,000 month in the UK, Australia, USA. Not possible.
