I registered as a store on Amazon.co.za (electronics, gadgets, etc) and even if literally stole the goods from distributors by the time their service fees and deliveries were added and a measly mark-up of my own it overshoots other local sites by a quarter mile...

My only idea is perhaps people are buying in massive massive stock orders and getting deep discounts for the bulk.

They claim my order was placed and will arrive tomorrow. Somewhat disconcerting that my 2FA was bypassed.

I reckon it's a 'soft launch' ie no advertising campaign beyond some basic PR, etc to ensure that they are able to 'live test' everything.

I'd be very surprised if the products available aren't ramped up pretty quickly.

I'd also be very surprised if they don't use the platform as a massive push into Africa...

Yes, I forgot to mention that - I was rather surprised at that but seem to remember the same occurring on the international and US sites as well.

I wonder if they do this to 'smooth' the purchasing process and are therefore willing to accept the fraud risk* and not hassle with refunds.

* if someone uses your card fraudulently, the risk falls on them to prove that you authorised the purchase

With the volume Amazon do the processor probably insulates them from that.

Well I think we can safely assume that they paid daily investor (@Bliksis loves them and that is actually how I found out about amazon.co.za this morning) and myBB to write articles about them today for advertising. Otherwise I would not have been searching on the forum for amazon.co.za today. but yes I agree with you it does seem like a soft launch and what is also nice it seems like they already have all the logistics and pickup points ready at day 1. So I would rate them 8/10 for a smooth launch day although it was not so spectacular as I imagined would be.
