Amazon.co.za's underwhelming launch

Not 100% close, very limited stock, but pricing wise they seem to use the same sellers as Takealot.
 
Amazon simply needs to fix this:

If they just add south africa as a shipping location for the majority of their products, they will be relevant.

Where products have delivery restrictions its usually distribution channel related. Even if they had a local distributor for the same product it's a separate channel so still wouldn't be shippable to ZA. This will change with time as these agreements age out and manufacturers adopt more D2C strategies.

Kindle hasn't launched in SA, so the ones on Takealot are "grey" products with no local support. Amazon is unlikely to sell you it's own unlaunched, unsupported products.

They'll likely start selling their own products (Kindle, echo etc) if these products launch in SA.

I am not sure why they try to write these articles if they are not even 1 Month into the launch yet, they have hardly done any pushing, it's basically a soft launch for them so more products can get loaded so the product catalog gets better and better, I would assume once they are happy with their product catalog compared to competitions like Takealot, they will start pushing it more.

And imagine once they launch Prime, which I can only see happening once they are happy with their product catalog so more items are available, then we will see some competition.

It's still waaay too early to write Amazon.co.za off, they are just getting started, let them cook.
 
MB should now think back and ask if the thumb drive from Takealot would have been delivered so quickly BEFORE Amazon was here.
My experience is that after Amazon launched here what I ordered from Takealot (only they had the item - a DSTV decoder plug) all of a sudden arrived in two days. In the past items took rather two weeks to arrive from Takealot.
I also now see items on Takealot that they did not bother to stock before Amazon arrived.

I ran away from Takealot the day one of their support staff told me on the phone "yes you buy the cellphone without any memory in it then you can add all the memory you want yourself".
 
I still have not ordered anything from Amazon.co.za

Amazon has the clout to fix that.
 
The lack of products, the lack of their prime service and the fact that none of the books available you can get a Kindle version on the SA site but you can on the US site.

They need to improve alot.
 
Well I cancelled my order from Amazon.co.za yesterday. Ordered a book a launch and they initially promised 2 - 8 working days when I ordered. I was overly generous giving them an extra few weeks but got gatvol yesterday. Not a good experience at all.
