It was never publicly owned, its been a private property for more than a 100 years at least.
 
First Nation are always first in line when there is money to be made. Ancestors my backside! They are always beetling about jobs and recognition and go around in animal skins and Porcupine quills claiming the country as theirs and everything as holy ground for which they have to be remunerated. I call BS on this practice and question their bona fides!
If they are really that stupid let them be and they can wonder the Kalahari for all i care. They are of no utility to man nor beast and are depriving many people of jobs because of their ambush tactics and BS!

The self appointed leaders of the GKK group never claimed it as sacred land in the past until they saw an opportunity to extort money from Amazon.

It belonged to the COCT who flogged it for R8 million to whoever who has flogged it to the developers for R132 Million.

They can try and force this developer to "deconstruct" but I don't think it will happen.

They want money. The self appointed GKKTC has no mandate. They have no list of who the GKK are in SA. Nobody elected them either.

They are self appointed leaders who have no clue who is GKK in SA. There is no list and nobody elected them. And many "whites" can claim direct Goringhaicona descent from Krotoa and her children after her marriage to the Dane, Pieter van Meerhof. None of these people and the "coloureds" that have interbred with the GKK (Most likely the self titled High Commissioner, Taureq Jenkins - rather English surname) have been notified that they are GKK.

This is a money making scam.

They deserve this for busing in voters (registering them against their properties as residents), vote rigging and trying to hijack the Obs Civic Association - when majority of Observatory voted no to the development.

That is why I mentioned it. It seems certain pieces of land is fair game but not others. This River Club site is far more sensitive than the common but the common is untouchable.

I'd fight for both those pieces of land, mostly because I want more green belt and less development. Also because there are plenty of other places development could happen.

The common is one of the last (if not the last) sites of the cape flats biome and so ecologically its quite important. Then from a heritage point of view there is evidence that people used used the site long before colonialists or even Nguni people came here, tools and beads etc. Then even more recently it was used by Khoisan as a passage to get from their locations on the north to the leesbeek. So it feels like there is way more of a claim on the common then the river club land. Also there are a few cemeteries... so I doubt they will ever develop that land.

Its also bio diverse and there is a bird sanctuary across the water but the most important thing is that its actually reclaimed land, its between two rivers and serves as a flood plain. So its really dumb to build there. Even though its a risk they are happy to take its probably going to affect areas upstream as well so there is justification for fighting it.
The heritage claim on the land is thin and I feel has sabotaged the opposition to the development. I feel like there are some bad actors at play there as well.
There is a strong indication that the land was never really used - even though its in a prime spot - pretty much because it wasn't useful.

Yeah, seems weird to build there. Also I think that area would serve better as just a nature reserve/bird sanctuary. Kinda sucks that buildings are going up there.
 
So just as a side note while I'm posting pictures.... this is where I would have put this development.
Its way more accessible, probably a boat load cheaper, on the site of the old power station opposite the sewerage works.
