Amazon could pull the plug on new SA headquarters

Was looking at the construction site yesterday and wondering about this. The land has already been built on. The canal is dredged and they have started the bridge.

Will Amazon "deconstruct" what has been done so far?

no somebody will build a Mcdonalds, or the land will just stand abandoned.

or more likely, with Amazons limitless funds, and experience dealing with pesky neighbors, just bribe and coerce them enough to finish the building.

If Amazon pulls out, the Goringhaicona leadership pretenders should be given the land to maintain in original condition at their own cost as they claim it is a sacred site. Let's see the three clowns put their hands in their pockets for their heritage.
It doesn't belong to them. It is privately owned land.

Why anyone else had to be involved in the development is the real issue for me. The only thing the city should have been involved with, is to make sure that the development has adequate water management so it doesn't add additional water to the river during rainy season. Things like requiring a certain percentage of rain water storage.

That is the only justifiable interference with private property because it causes uncontrollable issues later on with storm water.

Oops the arrival of the Dutch under JvR

You need to read up on history, JvR came here on instruction by the VOC. What had the VOC to do with the Portuguese, and what had their mission to do with your alleged invasion?

It is also nonsense that the Europeans avoided the Cape since 1510 until Jan van Riebeeck came on instruction to establish a replenishment station.

But, hey, whatever history suits you.

1st of all, is was the developer's own fault. Amazon looked at 10 prospective sites, and the Observatory one, wasnt one of them. The Obs one was then added later and the idea was to push for building, knowing there are complexities. It's actually greed from the developer side. Quite a few people from the Observatory side also objected to the additional development.

Many havent noticed there is also one in Mowbray, yet that's fallen a lot off the bus (the one near Rhodes High School).

The area is also a known flood plain, how River club got into there originally was also controversial. But oh well, that's past now. So it was pretty much cursed from the start.

But the developer got the land cheap, and wanted to force it through. Cape Town City only cares about profits, and they even passed a law saying they can run all building regulation (without your permission). So if your neighbour wants to triple story their house and it looks into yours, as long as the city gave permission, you have no recourse.

So yip, the whole idea was a very forced building project and should never have happened. Or it should have.....elsewhere.

Who told you this, and which civil engineer told you that the area is controversial?

But Cyril says government has a plan to tackle the triple threat. He said it right there, and that surely doesn't involve letting a R4+ billion investment die? /s
What's next? Amazon pulls their S3 dev team out of the country?

I think there is going to be even more of a fight about this.

So Amazon was just supposed to be the tenant in this building. A company was set up to develop and own this building (river club developments).
I don't know too much about them but I suspect that they are just a shell company to ensure local presence and BEE what not.
If Amazon pulls out the company will just fold and everything will be abandoned. Amazon can just walk away.

They can try and force this developer to "deconstruct" but I don't think it will happen.

Some hard lessons to be learned here.

Would love to know what are your sources for this?

Courts are there to protect people from bullies. That's why we love them, or hate them, depending on whether we agree with their ruling.

Besides storm water management, It must also add to CPT water supply for every new connection made to the water system. This project will add a significant amount of new water required. The CPT damns are not looking great, all development should be halted until the water supply system has been expanded to adequately provide for the population and new developments. And fvck Amazon, they just want a lanie site for their concrete block, they have lots of other options to office their slaves.

There are actual EIA that say why its a bad idea. If you live in the area then its obvious.

Consider even after they reclaimed the land back in the 30's they did not develop it. Its been vacant for a good reason and got little to do with the history of the area.
