Amazon could pull the plug on new SA headquarters

This is all about America bad, white people bad...

Exactly why the "first nation" card is being played. Complete opportunists that want money in the pocket.

Maybe all those descendants of the Goringhaicona with the wrong names and skin colour should apply for part of the benefits? Why isn't there a central register for all Goringhaicona descendants that should benefit? There are probably more than 1 million of those. But the three clowns on TV claim to represent them. I have never seen the descendants of the Goringhaicona being contacted and asked to elect a leadership either.

Until the Goringhaicona leadership is elected by the proven descendants, these three clowns should have no say whatsoever.

And they also need to provide proof of the land being "sacred".

Can anybody explain to me why if this land is so sacred to these people, there is currently nothing there now?

Battle of Salt River, that is the foundation of their claim. An event which was recorded by the Portuguese, but which became disputed in modern, or rather more recent, times. However, it wasn't a 'colonial' mission, it was for reasons of replenishment. What went afoul, or what happened in actual history, only the dead know.

It says International, baby.

Why would they lie?

I know it says international. So does Bhisho. And East London, Bloemfontein, Kimberly, Upington and George. But do any international flights leave or land there and is there an immigration facility? I had to use the Port Immigration to have my passport stamped in PE. Filthy little building at the south end of the harbour.

This is basically Amazon and the developer's fault for not doing due diligence. And since Amazon is into bribery and corruption why don't they try to pay off those seeking to block the construction.

Reminds me of AOC in all her wisdom losing New York an Amazon headquarters.
What you mean is that they refused to support Amazon's crony capitalism who, since the company were basically demanding kickbacks. So some other corrupt location decided to pay the bribes Amazon were demanding. In which case good for AOC refusing to be yet another corrupt politician.

None to my knowledge, hence the italics. :p

11 years ago the wife and I disembarked the plane, spotted the airport name and saw the tiny airport. We proceeded to chuckle in spite of the miserable weather on that day.

Thanks for the insight and reference.

So, do only those with Goringhaicona genes undiluted by European genes that began in Van Riebeeck's time have a claim to the land?

Did the Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Traditional Council and Observatory Civic Association make this claim of heritage before or after the interests of Amazon and the developer?

This is all about money. Nothing else. The "first nation" card is being conveniently trotted out as the issue is sensitive in the USA. As soon as Amazon pays the three self appointed leaders their money, the land will be handed over.

And what about all the land surrounding the area that has already been built on? The historical article claims their village was not near the river but higher up in bushes.

Move to Joburg, better property options here, build your own river and have a better workforce

Tauriq Jenkins, high commissioner of Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council

OK, who appointed this guy and who recognised his appointment? Where is his accreditation? You can't just walk in calling yourself whatever you like. And Tauriq sounds rather Muslim (I had no idea the Goringhaicona were Muslim in 1510) with an injection of European Jenkins genes.

So, what are the requirements to be a member of the Goringhaicona? Who are these people that claim to be leaders of the Goringhaicona?

And have a security system that will blow a Yank's mind. Forget going into the city centre like they're used to. Remember, they're used to houses like this with open lawns:

1. She wasn't alone in her protest and didn't "lose New York" anything, she saved New York $3bn that was going to be given to Amazon as an incentive.
2. Amazon still moved into New York, but without the $billions in incentives just months later.
No, far from the truth. They still did not open a new Head Quarters in New York like they would have. They just opened much smaller new offices in New York, 1/20th of the size for around 1000+ employees.

Big difference between that and a $2.5 Billion construction project which they have previously planned, no corporate campus, and without a guaranteed 25,000 new jobs created for NYC which had been agreed to.

Loads of houses with open lawns in joburg, the perimeters of the estate are secure

You need to ask the person I put in bold,

Remembering the Khoikhoi victory over Dom Francisco Almeida at the Cape in 1510

Abstract

The general issue of how key moments of anti-colonial struggle are remembered in different colonial and postcolonial contexts is considered in relation to the specific case of the Khoikhoi victory over Viceroy Francisco Almeida in Table Bay on 1 March 1510. The contrasting literary and historical versions of the Khoikhoi victory are examined in three contexts: first, in the sixteenth-century Portuguese writings of the poet Luis Vaz de Camões and the chroniclers João de Barros, Fernão Lopez de Castanheda, Damião de Goís and Gaspar Correa; secondly, in the writings of British intellectuals of the period 1770–1830, including Robert Southey, William Julius Mickle and William Robertson; and thirdly, in the writings of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Southern Africans, including historian George McCall Theal, novelist André Brink and South African president Thabo Mbeki.

It is this David Johnson's gatherings, as published in 2009, which are now taken as history, I believe. There are other works on this as well, various discoveries coming to its own conclusions.

This event had nothing to do with colonialism, but it is conveniently used in that context.
