Amazon could pull the plug on new SA headquarters

You need to ask the person I put in bold,
It is this David Johnson's gatherings, as published in 2009, which are now taken as history, I believe. There are other works on this as well, various discoveries coming to its own conclusions.
This event had nothing to do with colonialism, but it is conveniently used in that context.

Of course, the racist and Stalinist Mbeki would have a dig at colonialism, no matter how wrong he is, at any opportunity. His greatest ambition was to see whites living in cardboard boxes under bridges as his blue light cavalcade passed.

Where?

Difference is the Yank kids play on the lawns and don't pay for security.

The America home security system market size reached US$ 8.7 Billion in 2021. Looking forward, IMARC Group expects the market to reach US$ 22.4 Billion by 2027, exhibiting a growth rate (CAGR) of 16.8% during 2022-2027.

OT, but Ramaphosa has also gone down that road,

In that historic battle, brave Zulu warriors with assegais succumbed in large numbers to the firepower of the Voortrekkers, and, it is said, the Ncome River ran red with the blood of these freedom fighters.

For they were freedom fighters, because they were fighting for the freedom of our land, and they sacrificed immensely, fighting against invaders.

also conveniently ignoring what led up to that event, but I guess it is his perspective.

History will always have its iterations.

To get back OT, that development is much needed to boost our economy, provide opportunities and to upskill people.

And the SA market with pro rata population and GDP? Incomplete comparison fallacy Mr Google. Ever been to the USA?

And is being held hostage by three self appointed (High Commissioner of the Goringhaicona nogal) unelected opportunists who have no idea who can claim to be Goringhaicona in SA, never mind a list of names of eligible voters.

When you've managed to convince so many of the population that free handouts are their future, they really have no need for a large, incoming-generating, job-creating conglomerate to setup shop.

This is basically Amazon and the developer's fault for not doing due diligence. And since Amazon is into bribery and corruption why don't they try to pay off those seeking to block the construction.

What you mean is that they refused to support Amazon's crony capitalism who, since the company were basically demanding kickbacks. So some other corrupt location decided to pay the bribes Amazon were demanding. In which case good for AOC refusing to be yet another corrupt politician.

Due diligence was done. Amazon was made fully aware and in typical American fashion decided to steam roller ahead assuming they would get their way.

These twats now want the land all of a sudden. I bet nobody would give a fck about it if nobody wanted to develop it and instead let it remain a toilet.

If Amazon pulls out, the Goringhaicona leadership pretenders should be given the land to maintain in original condition at their own cost as they claim it is a sacred site. Let's see the three clowns put their hands in their pockets for their heritage.

1. She wasn't alone in her protest and didn't "lose New York" anything, she saved New York $3bn that was going to be given to Amazon as an incentive.
2. Amazon still moved into New York, but without the $billions in incentives just months later.

1. They were going to get a tax break IF and only IF a whole bunch of conditions were met that would have brought in a lot more than $3bn of wealth to New York. There is plenty of information about it,

Proponents of the project, including Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, say for every $1 Amazon receives in incentives, the city and state will receive $9 in return.

"The total state and city revenue that will be produced is estimated at $27.5 billion," said Cuomo at the November news conference announcing the deal. "The revenue-to-incentive ratio is 9-to-1 – that is the highest rate of return for an economic incentive program that the state has ever offered."

Nothing about the tax break was unusual

The three largest incentives Amazon is getting from New York come from three as-of-right (that is, incentives available to any company that meets the requirements) programs: the Excelsior Jobs Credit Tax Program, the Relocation and Expansion Assistance Program (REAP) and the Industrial and Commercial Abatement Program (ICAP). The latter two tax breaks are incentives established by the state government that affect the city tax rolls, while the former program affects state tax rolls.

The whole HQ2 pushback by AOC was exactly like the pushback they are receiving here. There were a small group of unions who wanted more money and Amazon said no. So they lobbied and roped in politicians to create a hoora combined with misinformation.

Some of those unions had mob backgrounds. So AOC literally colluded with mobsters to strong arm Amazon.

All in all, Amazon backed out because of the political landscape, not because they weren't going to get the deal. As stated above, those tax breaks were a given, because ANY company gets them that brings the given amount of revenue into the state. What was the problem here was that there were unions using politicians to strong arm companies for contracts. Amazon wanted fair tenders to go out, these unions wanted the contracts defacto. When they heard they weren't guaranteed those contracts they lobbied and paid politicians like AOC.

That is how lobbying in the US works, you should educate yourself more.

2. No they didn't, 2nd HQ is in Virginia now with a lot of growth there now whereas New York is not. There are no divisions that will be expanding there unless they absolutely need a footprint there. That is company directive driven from the top.

And since Amazon is into bribery and corruption why don't they try to pay off those seeking to block the construction
Really, point out some sources that they are into bribery and corruption?

If anything situations like HQ2 show the opposite. If Amazon agreed to union contracts that gave them exclusivity regardless of whether they were the cheapest, best, etc., they wouldn't have had any pushback. When they didn't agree to that and instead insisted on fair and open contracts, suddenly they were the devil.

The company warehouse staff situation used to be bad, no doubt about it, but there has never been to my knowledge corruption or bribes. And furthermore, Amazon recently fired the guy who was the head of the retail division. The guy who was known as "the sniper" for firing people by siting on catwalks and looking for slackers. He was the CEO of their retail segment and was replaced. Just about every single Amazon employee that has had something bad about them in the press that is anti employee has been fired or replaced (ie. someone hired above them in such a way that they resign) in the last 2 years.

So I would say they are doing a pretty good job of cleaning up in terms of employee relations.

I work in this part of the tech sector, so I keep a VERY close eye on all these employers and their dirty "secrets".
Frankly Amazon seems to be absolutely trending in the right direction.

The representatives of the Goringhaicona, Khoi and Khoin in this case are self appointed too. There has never been an election with all their members being contacted and polled. They don't even have a list of all the GKK people in SA. Unless the representation is of pure GKK genes, which I doubt they are seeing the Goringhaicona self appointed High Commissioner has the surname Jenkins, they cannot exclude the about 1 million "whites" who can claim documented descendance. Never mind the number of "Coloureds" that haven't been polled.

This is a money grab by political actors.

I know it says international. So does Bhisho. And East London, Bloemfontein, Kimberly, Upington and George. But do any international flights leave or land there and is there an immigration facility? I had to use the Port Immigration to have my passport stamped in PE. Filthy little building at the south end of the harbour.

An "international" airport has customs and immigration facilities, but does not necessarily have scheduled international flights. Upington is a better example of this than Port Elizabeth: it has no scheduled international flights, but the general aviation community finds it very convenient to refuel and clear customs/immigration if travelling to/from Namibia.

1st of all, is was the developer's own fault. Amazon looked at 10 prospective sites, and the Observatory one, wasnt one of them. The Obs one was then added later and the idea was to push for building, knowing there are complexities. It's actually greed from the developer side. Quite a few people from the Observatory side also objected to the additional development.

Many havent noticed there is also one in Mowbray, yet that's fallen a lot off the bus (the one near Rhodes High School).

The area is also a known flood plain, how River club got into there originally was also controversial. But oh well, that's past now. So it was pretty much cursed from the start.

But the developer got the land cheap, and wanted to force it through. Cape Town City only cares about profits, and they even passed a law saying they can run all building regulation (without your permission). So if your neighbour wants to triple story their house and it looks into yours, as long as the city gave permission, you have no recourse.

So yip, the whole idea was a very forced building project and should never have happened. Or it should have.....elsewhere.

Battle of Salt River, that is the foundation of their claim. An event which was recorded by the Portuguese, but which became disputed in modern, or rather more recent, times. However, it wasn't a 'colonial' mission, it was for reasons of replenishment. What went afoul, or what happened in actual history, only the dead know.
It actually lead to the invasion of the Dutch afterwards as JvR struck a deal for his halfway station with the Khoi, as long as they keep the Portuguese slavers at bay.

And because of the cadres we cannot have anything nice in this clowntree
It could and should have been built elsewhere. Even takealot built their side elsewhere.

The project was in the wrong location from the get go, only the developer (and not Amazon) thought it was in the right location.

Just look at how dead and empty the riverfront officeblock at Mowbray is. They could have easily built it that side, or expanded onto there.

Developers only care about money. Do you think its about providing jobs or affordable houses? No way. It's about profits and bonuses.
