Amazon will pull support for some older Kindles

Its more to do with what "ending support" means.

On the Ipad it meant that one day the apps worked and the next day they didn't.
Nothing needed to change but now by updating the app they disabled it.

I can't even read stuff that was already downloaded on the device.
Its insane that people can't see how vindictive that is.

I think its for security reasons. If you factory reset then the device is vulnerable (mainly to you jailbreaking it).
So it does feel like a intentional brick and not a co-incidental brick.
Updating to the latest version would include all the vulnerability patches up to the support period.

Yes, the store is a service and it does make sense that they shouldn't have to support infinite devices on the store.

I actually don't think its about jailbreaking it or anything of the sort.. its possibly more that the registration endpoints fail and the firmware bricks the device when that happens.

You never needed to jailbreak a kindle anyway, it always supported sideloading of books.

I'll have to remember the reason why you might jailbreak it. In the back of my mind the side loading involved emailing the file to the device - which obviously wouldn't work now.

For the iPad at least, I have to jailbreak it to do anything now

For a Kindle, you plug it into your PC via USB (at least that worked with all my older ones), which is why the majority of this is just fake "outrage" for clicks.

You can load books through USB but you need to convert them to .azw3 or .mobi format, this can be done with Calibre.
 
That's some sucky news but I stopped buying on Kindle when it became evident that, in many cases, the Kindle version was more expensive than the physical.

For no damned reason at all.

Hermitically sealed less read volumes and sent them to storage and sttarted buying physicals again. They never stop working.

Just grab them for $1.99 / $2.99 https://www.ereaderiq.com/ when they go on sale. I have over 400 books doing that.

Didn’t they nuke USB sideloading a year or two ago?

I’ve never used it so wouldn’t know but I feel like that was news at the time and why jailbreaking became a thing.

With them killing Family Sharing as best they can I’ve already spun up Lazylibrarian and Kavita just need to configure it all.

It annoys me because you want to do the right thing and you don’t mind paying the money but then these companies literally make it harder for you than piracy to do so.

Only for books from the kindle store. You can still sideload books obtained from other sources though you may have to convert it to a kindle format first.
