AMD 68xx Reviews

I see prophecy has them listed but no pricing as yet.. wanna see what they cost.. The 6870 seem to perform just shy of the 5870 and slightly higher than the 5850 and on par with the 470.. Pricing will certainly be interesting..

One thing I'm rather peeved about - who the #$%^ decided to change the numbering scheme? I think 99% of us were perfectly happy with x8xx being top end single GPU parts, x9xx being the dual GPUs, and x7xx being the more mainstream parts

edit: review is back online at guru3d

It's a clever naming scheme change... people will see "6870... at R2500!! that's outrageous, must buy...". It'll catch out some people for sure... however, my god these things are fast :eek:, the 6870 (6770, or what the name should be) competes with the 5870 :eek:. If they price these things at around the R2500 mark ($200 mark), Nvidia is going to get caned.

just read the entire guru3d article... depends on the pricing, but I say nvidia are about to be nobbed

haha amd ftw

:D

Yeah the naming is silly - apparently it has something to do with them still wanting to sell 5770s. Who would buy a 5770 now though?

As good as these cards are though, I wont be upgrading till probably late sometime next year. Just not worth it for me.

With the release of the second generation DX11 class GPUs today AMD confused their consumers a little. The shift in naming will be bothersome for some of you, what we have been looking at today should have really been labeled Series 6700 as the fastest products, which you'd expect to be placed in the 6800 series, still need to be released. Talking offsite with AMD learned us that this was done to make some room in the sub mid-range segment for upcoming unannounced products, we can only hint to Fusion here.

:)

The 5770s (Juniper iirc) is not being discontinued. Hence the 67xx cards will still be Juniper parts. Thats why they changed the naming scheme. One important thing to note with the 6870 - even though the GTX470 should get price drops and performs essentially the same, it consumes almost 100W more which has verious implications. I really cant see anyone buying a 470 now, unless they make it considerably cheaper than the 6870.

dude for 100W they gonna have to make it a LOT cheaper...

power = heat

we dont like heat :sick:

:D

edit : also could be a determining factor for ppl to have to get a new PSU... thats a biggie!!!

wow this card seems to be what the nvidia 9600gt (i think it was that card) was to the mid range market. competitive in terms of performance at a pretty good price point.
