I just stole this from Carbonite... but I really need a larger audience to verify this:cry:

Computer microprocessor manufacturer AMD has decided to stop focusing its attention on the PC market and move resources to the mobile world. Softpedia reports that the Bulldozer mishap may very well have persuaded management that their future in the PC business was soon drawing to an end.

The AMD FX microprocessor often performed worse than the older generation of Phenom 2s, and shortly after release AMD announced an executive restructuring as well as the retrenching of approximately 10 % of their workforce. The poor performance combined with delay upon delay drove many people to Intel, and makes Bulldozer one of the biggest mistakes made by AMD.

With a very small resource pool, AMD cannot afford to pour money into a dead-end architecture and wish to focus more on evolving its Fusion platform to the tablet and smartphone markets.

“We’re at an inflection point,” said AMD spokesman Mike Silverman, according to a Mercury News report. “We will all need to let go of the old ‘AMD versus Intel’ mindset, because it won’t be about that anymore.”

Unfortunately, AMD isn’t moving to an open playing field. The mobile market is already fairly saturated with ARM processors, and Nvidia has just released its Kal-El Tegra 3 chip. AMD would also be cutting off what remains of their desktop user-base, so whether they plan to completely pull out of the higher-end desktop market or simply move resources around remains to be seen. Sadly even the most hardcore amd fan cannot justify buying their products anymore.

Not good for us but amd need to focus where they can compete i guess.

Damn, with no competition we'll soon be paying a premium for video cards again.

:( <3 amd

i cant fathom to someday run a intel board + some i10 cpu with ddr5 ram and all i have left in my amd case is some ati 10 series and a AMD POWER sticker on the front of my case.

Sadly your kind are leaving AMD in droves thus they cannot sustain having a product 2 generations behind anymore.

I'm confused, is this the author's opinion or fact?

AMD JUST started manufacturing and releasing their own memory. Why would they do that if they plan to move out of the desktop space? That would be very conflicting.

AMD and Intel make more money from enterprise customers (eg. servers) than desktop customers. So perhaps they will focus more on server.

so they wont completely stop making cpu's and boards ? what is this world coming to :<>:erm:

I just wonder if they will stop making graphics cards as well? I knew ATI was doomed the minute this lot took over.

in terms of gpus before the takeover ATI were were to nVidia what AMD is to Intel right now... a generation behind.

At the moment I think the competition between the two gpu companies is perfect.

I've only owned Intel cpus but I still liked that there was an alternative. I hope AMD make a comeback.

I've never in my life even seen an amd server appart from the HP microserver

Amd are focusing away from competing at the high discrete end of the desktop space. There is still plenty of room for competitive desktop CPUs in the Apu and laptop/ultra book space which is growing at a greater pace than traditional desktops anyway. I was playing bf3 today on an a8-3850 with no graphics card and it was actually playable albeit low ish settings. That is very impressive for a dedicated igp solution. Amd just cannot beat intel for now in high performance segment but they are not the of the CPU game.

My very first PC I bought with my own money had an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ CPU. Awesome piece of hardware. I've since upgraded to a core i7 but AMD will be missed!

I never owned an AMD processor, only intel. My friend had an AMD and we had more of the less same computer specs, but his was much more snappy it seemed. Maybe ATI will now gain more of the graphics market (when they come up with their own physics processor integrated in)

Why would you want more proprietary tech in the market when there are similar (if not better) solutions currently out there that provide real physics in games
