AMD Radeon HD 2900XT Review

Like I said the score is entirely CPU bound. I got upto 201K with CPU overclock, using a GTS and GTX in the same config gets aroudn the same score as well. In fact between GTX and HD it's 900 points or so which is ell within the margin of variance between two runs.

3DM06 is 11.47K
 
phew thats a shocker

i get 10475 with a 8800gts and e6300 will run aqua and 3dmark05 now now and see

for aquamark and 3dmark05 i am going to 8xAA AF is app controlled and super sampling is off? does this sound correct?

ok well aquamark i only got 157000 phew way behind :) but then again as you say maybe its because your cpu was clock at 3.7ghz :)

As I said 3DM06 is not the strong point of this card and if you look 3DM06 isn't exactly telling the fairest picture either... The 8600GTS wipes the floor with 7900GS+7600GT but in actual game tests it's rubbish.

Yes it is a far better buy than the 8800GTS which was an excellent buy in itself ;) Probably the best gfx card from ATI since Radeon9500...
 
can i ask why they would bring out a card that cannot compete with nvidia's beast?

surely most gamers that had 3k to spend have bought a 8800gts?
 
Are they also releasing their performance card first without any mid range?

I have very little time to buy a new card as I've sold my current one, but I might have waited a week or two if ATI's offering looked good.

So no news of the HD2600 Pro/XT yet Shock? I guess you don't test lowly cards like that :(

it seems to be competing with the GTS 640MB, not the 320MB, in which case the price is competitive indeed. also note that the drivers are causing some "anomolies" which would hopefully increase the speed a little once a driver update is released
 
No those will come out later. I simply don't have any so can't comment on what I don't have in detail. Should be faster than 8600 though and cheaper which is a good thing but also very easy as 8600 suck...

AMD will win where it counts, cheaper than 8800GT 640MB, but faster and with better package ;)

Were is that proof?? From all the reviews I have seen in many games it's about the same or very close.

This card has the edge were price is concerned and the 8800 gts 640mb has the edge when it comes to power consumption.

I don't you will unhappy with either one.

It is slightly off tradition that the GPU company's flagship product sails off not to meet the flagship of it's competitor, but one target lower. Then again, the lower we go down the price pyramid, the bigger the audience, more people with the budget to spend. I'd say that there is no clear winner between the 8800 GTS and X2900XT, the GTS displayed more consistent performance behavior while the X2900XT fluctuates around due to the in-matured driver. I would say that despite the heat thrown out by the GPU, the X2900XT overclocks better than the 8800GTS by 8-10%, but that's putting out a lot more heat and drawing more power than it already consumes. So this is something potential XT buyers should take note of, the heat produced by the card is no small amount, nor is the power consumed by it - more than 60w over the GTS. What you would be investing in is a higher potential of upcoming performance boosts (including the latest pre-Alpha 8.37.4.2_47323 Catalyst just released 3 days before this review) and full HDCP support with integrated audio controller. And of course the new programmable Tessellation technology which we will probably not see support in games until much later.

Not the fastest video card in the market for sure, but definitely holds it's own at it's current price-point. We only hope that supply will be adequate and not lead to an indirect increase in prices due to short supply. We hope to see some interesting implementations from various card partners as well, be it overclocked specifications, or improved coolers.

We'll be retesting the X2900XT vs GTS vs GTX again in 2 weeks with the latest drivers for both ATi and NVIDIA cards, and hopefully a DirectX 10 game or two!

3dmark IS the strong point of the radeon. Look at game comparisons where it lags behind the 320MB GTS at times. (prey, FEAR)
Synthetic benchmarks are only useful when you actually bench your own system against people with similar hardware or against yourself after overclocks. If you want to make comparisons, use games and keep in mind the difference in image quality.

^^^ one of those bad instances... maybe it'll disappear with better drivers?

turn on AA in some games, and it crawls. possibly driver issues (alpha ones used in reviews)...but come on. Why were they delaying the whole time? What were they doing during that time?? Sure the vista drivers work well, what about getting that sexy AA working as it should?
Image quality of the AF isn't as good as the nvidia cards though.

The card sucks up 220W on its own which is more than the 8800 ULTRA! It doesn't beat the GTX, never mind the ultra. Not very efficient at all. Recommended amperage on the 12V rails is 35A. Hope you have lots of money to blow on a PSU otherwise yours will go pop soon.

I'll be getting an 8800GTS soon! I was expecting something phenomenal after waiting since november for ATi/AMD to release something to compete with nvidia...6 months later...this?

so you let your comp get there cards out months before you do, then you come into the market with an inferior product?

if you think that is good business well i dunno hey, i think its shocking

lots of amd/ati fan boi's will soon be nvidia fan boi's

if anything this will damage ati beyond repair but we will see
 
NOW why has the ATI/AMD fan-boy run quiet? From the first post I though Hey! ATI has done it only to realize it rather sound like early sales talk. No wonder some is so defensive. Selective engineering at its best!

:( I really don't feel like waiting exactly one month for a new card. Maybe when the prelim benchies come out I'll make a choice.

Are you sure they will be cheaper, the 8600 isn't badly priced. I'm sure they will be better though, but I don't have much more than R1600 to spend, just enough for a 8600GT XXX....
