AMD to integrate LTE modems into Ryzen notebook CPUs

And why is this significant? This is not unlike Lenovo having built-in HSPA functionality in the old W5xx range. SIM slot behind battery.

It's in the CPU.

I suppose it has something to do with space, power efficiency and better speeds between CPU and modem.

Less space required in laptop, which can be used for millions of other stuff.
No need to buy an additional card if it's not pre-installed for around R2000.
Cost saving for consumer.
 
There was that one thing about the Snapdragon 845 being put into a laptop now. Those have LTE modems integrated, so AMD just competing to stay relevant.

I think it's a nifty idea. I'd have one.
 
Saw something like this on YouTube yesterday, where Asus launched a Snapdragon powered notebook with Gigabyte LTE built in. not sure if that was CPU based as well tho.

It's about one single thing: Power consumption, ie battery life.

Tomorrow 8 December, at an event in Hawaii, Qualcomm announce that Windows 2-in-1s and portables running Snapdragon 830 and 845 bring true always-connected to Windows devices with up to 22 hours of battery life. More coming at CES early next year. With WOA, this is the beginning of the end of Intel on client devices, and x86 emulation allows most Win32 apps to tolerably run on ARM.(so yes, you can run Chrome for Windows, Photoshop, etc on your ARM-based Windows machines).

As IHVs switch from Intel to Qualcomm/ARM, AMD wants some of that away-from-Intel business.

Do apps need to be rewritten to run on a ARM based windows platform?

Whats the point of a x86 emulator if the majority of software is 64bit these days, sometimes they don't even offer 32bit versions, Adobe being one of them?

Microsoft was promising similar things 3 years ago, plenty Windows 10 machines on the Intel platform and what? It came very few, mostly cheap tablets of unknown makes. Even a null licence fee for devices up to 10" screen didn't help.

A reason was Windows 10 choking up on 16GB storage (esp. on forced updates and Telemetry), not Intel. The same is going to be on other platforms.
