Wherever the D3C0D4 ring leads me!!
I'm finally getting close to doing my upgrade and as it turns out I can spend a lot more on a CPU then I originally wanted. I have to decide between the AMD64 4000+ and the AMDX2 4400+. I thought the X2 would be the obvious choice but I'm not so sure anymore. It'll definitely be more future proof than the AMD64 but is it really worth it?

I don't know why but something's nagging me. Should I just ignore it and go for the X2?

from what i have read, if you play games or you want your pc to have the best 3dmark scored the AMD X2 wont do you justice, more peoples have had problems than have a good experience, right now i reccomend the Amd 64 4000+, i will only reccomend the X2 when windows vista is out and windows supports it fully

pm me if you would like a quote on the pc you would like

I agree with Bob HOWEVER if you can afford the 4800+ then there is no question that you should take that. It is 2 4000+'s on one CPU. So you still get the full 4000+ performance in non-multi threaded programs but you get double the performance in things like 3D Rendering.

Even the 4600+ would be worth it it is 2 3800+'s.

AFAIK 4600+ = 2x512k Cache and 2x2.4Ghz
4800+ = 2x1MB Cache and 2x2.4Ghz

I have a 4000+ and I can tell you that the 4000+ is a great CPU but if you have the cash to go for either of the above X2's they will go a long way.

Well this is not really a Question, The AMD x2 are much better than the standard 64bit AMD chips. (and they are not that much more) + all 64bit AMD chips have been discontinued.

GO AMD X2

Yeah go for the X2, when buying computers today always get whats likely to last the longest or as you put it futureproof

From what I understand the 4400+ and the 4800+ both have 1MB cache on each of it's cores. The dif in price is nearly R3000 tho. So I'd rather go for the 4400+.

I think I'll go with the X2. I like the idea of being future proof. Even if it's only for 6 months or so.

Really? Seems the people who make the Athlon 64's would tend to disagree with you.

Here is the AMD roadmap

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/VirtualPressRoom/0,,51_104_608,00.html

As you can see there is no mention of the 64's being discontinued.

The cache is not the important part. The 4800+ runs both cores at 2.4Ghz where the 4400+ runs both at 2.2Ghz (If I remember correctly). In terms of performance I dont know how big the difference is.

Yeah, but it's R3000 more....... R3000!!!!! I've got a little extra cash on me not a whole bankload. :)

Yep, all 32-bit sempron socket A and 754 have been discontinued too, so its just 64-bit semprons and athlons from 3200+ and up that are still being made.

next year the new socket amds will be coming out, untill then the 939 socket amd 64+ are going strong.

My firend just bought a dual core processor, he has the X2 4400+, he also has a 7800GTX and his machine is running like an animal, from trying games and all the rest on it i will def reccomend it

Person...

It's normal for lower end CPUs to be discontinued as the process technology evolves and faster and more powerful processors become available, but that does not imply that the whole architechture is being discontinued (There is a difference you know)

Eventually it will be phased out but so what... Those processors still offer good value for money.

That said I deffinately agree that buying the latest technology is always a good idea, if you don't mind the teething problems and premiums that go with it.

Standard 32bit AMD chips are being discontinued. Rectron and DOT Information Technology along with other supplyers are no longer stocking.

AMD® Sempron 2600+ 333FSB Socket 754
AMD® Sempron 2800+ 333FSB Socket 754

AMD® Athlon™ 64 2800+ Socket 754
AMD® Athlon™ 64 3000+ Socket 754
AMD® Athlon™ 64 3200+ Socket 754

AMD® Athlon™ 64 2800+ Socket 939
AMD® Athlon™ 64 3000+ Socker 939
AMD® Athlon™ 64 3200+ Socket 939

Many of these chips have already been discontinued and no longer feature on the AMD Pricelist.

bang for buck amd cpu would be the x2-3800 right now. cheaper than the 4000+

amd64 bit is not being discontinued, but thanks for the laugh. Sure, lower speed grade cpus get phased out, thats life. Skt 754 is dead.
