Amobia and DotA 2

Hi guys,

Just wanting to know if anyone else is having problems with playing DotA 2 or other Steam games?

I am on Amobia 4mb uncapped, just signed up. I have amazing signal as I can actually visibly see the tower I connect to.

The problem is that I am unable to play DotA 2. I have no lag in the game, but in a 16min game I am dc'd 5 times and need to wait about a minute or so before I'm able to reconnect. People are unable to hear me at all if I use the voice chat as they say it breaks up incredibly badly. If I type it takes about 30sec before the text appears on the screen. My ping on local servers is about 230ms with a packet loss of 49%.

Amobia has been attending to the problem since Tuesday, but I'm starting to doubt that they are actually doing anything. Surely it's as simple as listing the Steam/Dota 2 ports as ACL safe? I'm guessing they use Squid to throttle me to hell?

Anyway, I'm just wanting to know if anyone else is having the same problems and if they were able to fix it?

Amobia did tell me I should try play a different game because a few months ago they had another client who also had problems with DotA and they were unable to fix it. Unfortunately my friends are unwilling to play anything other than DotA. Also, I'm quite sure no other ISP tells their customers, "Maybe you should play a different game?".

Telkom offer a 4mb uncapped with a telephone line for an extra R50 a month, so it really is seeming rather appealing right now. If I could get the installation cost I paid back, I would jump ship instantly.

Hey,

I've been with Amobia for over a year now and did have some problems with latency a while back but has since been fixed.

can you possible provide a trace route to the Dota Server you playing on?

I know sometimes the Jitter on the line is quite bad depending on the load and time of day...and possibly this is why the connection drops as it is timing out?

Unfortunately I don't play PC games so cannot help in that respect.

This is exactly what I sent them. (They didn't ask for it, but I kinda figured a trace would help)

Hi
Been playing dota 2 for 2 years now using DSL, 3G and Iburst tech. I believe the game has a problem, I use the netgraph 1 command in the consol and notice that the ping In traffic climbs to 2000 ms at times, when it hits 3000 then I usually get disconnected.

I can advise that you use the http://dev.dota2.com/ to post your problems, the developers actually get in conact with ISP's to assist them with resolving network issue's. Sorry I cant be more of an assistance.

I have a strange issue where, If i am playing against hero's who have the ability to spawn extra units (e.g. Undying (Tombstone)) my game becomes almost unplayable, not sure if it is caused due to an increased amount of traffic generated by these extra units.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I'll make a post on the dev forums as soon as I can get onto it. For some reason the page isn't opening.

I've recently moved and instead of going thru the hassle of getting a phone line and all that I decided to give Amobia a try because there tower is only a few meters away from me. Before I moved I was on Mweb 4mb uncapped and didn't experience a single problem.

You're stuck using 3G? I was stuck with 3G for about 4 months when I stayed at another place. Couldn't get DSL because the owner didn't want a telephone line installed, couldn't use a wisp because we were in a ditch. Could use 8ta because we weren't in coverage, same with MTN and Cell C. All we could use was Vodacom. The speeds were decent, but the cost was horrendous.
