Any advice ?

yes you can- remember that the 3g card is just the internet connection- that just determines the maximum speed capability of the download. where are you going wrong with the application? have you tried other applications?

The program is installed with 'defaults'. I haven't changed anything re port forwarding etc.
Once I've got a torrent that I want to download, it doesn't start for possibly 15 min. Then it starts, at a trickle pace, running at about 1kb/sec.

Same thing with Limewire. Default setup, but it doesn't even want to connect to the Limewire network

well you get seeds and leeches- the more seeds there are the better, but if you have more leeches than seeds, even though you have many seeds the speed would be dismal.
popular stuff generally has the highest seeds. wait, why am i advising you on something like this?

The problem is when you're on MTN's network you have a private IP address behind MTN's firewall, so people on the outside cannot initiate a connection to you.

If you were on a dial-up connection you would be assigned an IP address that that is accessible to the outside world.

In terms of the BitTorrent protocol, the more peers you connect to, the faster it is. You'll be restricted to making outbound connections and won't be able to accept incoming connections, limiting the number of peers you can connect to.

Read this article, entitled Why is Being Firewalled Bad?, it explains it nicely.
