It is a pretty 1 sided report. Those Whites are still in better conditions than a lot of blacks.

Does it make it right?

Also, they are in that position because of laws in this country that discriminate against white people.

Jeepers. I thought Fox News was bad at reporting until I watched this.

I think you're overreacting a bit. There are many white poor people who are 'falling through the cracks', although I think it's more likely a result of the vicious cycle of poverty and the government's ineptitude, rather than their skin colour.

I don't see a problem with highlighting the fact that there are many poor white South Africans as well, and as far as I can see, this video didn't claim ALL white South Africans are living in poverty while ALL black South Africans are living the high life, it even mentions the millions of blacks who are still living in abject poverty.

I'm not denying there are poor whites but c'mon that is a piss poor bit of one side, emotionally driven reporting.

Why is it one sided? Everyone knows there are many black people living in abject poverty in SA and so it is not that newsworthy, while alot of people don't know there are white people who are poor in SA.

I was chatting to a white southern suburbs lady the other day and she told me that there are no white people living in poverty in SA! I hope she watches RT :D

The problem with reports like these is that even if they're reporting on legitimate issues (which they are), the obvious bias overshadows the subject matter. Which highlights a systemic problem with the way in which we consume news - we like to pick sides instead of looking at things objectively. The rest of this thread will more than likely illustrate this perfectly...

The report was about poor whites in SA. How was it one-sided?

The introduction alone attempts to make out as if all whites are feeling like we're "second class citizens". That's just the introduction before they cut to the segment itself, which really doesn't portray much of a scope of context at all, which any decent report would.

If you read my post properly, I clearly state that there is a legitimate cause for concern and a need to report on poverty, but I really don't believe that a distinction between white and black poverty needs to be made. The reporter clearly thinks so.

EDIT: Paula Sleer, the journalist. Why does that name ring such a bell?

But the reasons for poverty between these two groups are different, why not then make the distinction?

No, they're both borne out of a dysfunctional and abusive government. One happened decades ago. The other is happening now. I suspect that had the report been about black-only poverty, and was introduced as "black in SA are poor", it would have resulted in a plethora of comments about whites not being cared about once again...

How they became poor? The reasons are very different. I don't need to spell it out for you do I?

Go humour us. How many of them do you think were living in squalor before and after apartheid ended?

You actually do because I can see that you want to point to AA & BEE. Which will cause me to point out that as a % white people have the lowest unemployment rate of all other the other population groups in this country.
