The ANC today released a statement stating that were a referendum to be given to the Western Cape the people would declare it a free and independent country.

Straight from the ANC's mouth...


The key message is that uncivilised Africans want to wrest the last European outpost from white liberal dominance. These divisions are so severe that were it to be put to a referendum right now, the majority of citizens would support a Unilateral Declaration of Independence - The Republic of the Western Cape.

How does one get a referendum in place? I'm guessing it would be nigh on impossible. The ANC owes South Africans at least one me thinks :D
 
They're just speculating on what the people of the Western Cape want, based on their election loss and the DA's attitude. It's a spiteful piece from a handful of ANC people who lost their jobs because their party didn't perform.

Provincial ANC officials Mcebisi Skwatsha, Lynne Brown, Sipho Kroma, Songeso Mjongile and Max Ozinsky.

Was it meant to be taken seriously, I'm not so sure. It's reminiscent of the carp that Bennie Bunsee writes on a regular basis about the lack of "Africanness" of the Cape.
 
What kind of majority would this referendum need to be passed? (51%?) Enough to amend the constitution? (66.7%?)

I doubt whether the Premier has the power to call one, so let's not get our hopes up. I also don't see Ozinsky, Rasool & co moving upcountry if it does happen.

For once I can agree with you.. :) but also think they were trying their luck again..
trying to warn the ANC of the possible strength for the Republic of the Western Cape... with a bit of sarcasm

The vast majority of South African citizens would most certainly NOT be in favour of anything of that sort (independance of the WC).

I disagree completely. In fact I don't know anybody that would be opposed, only people who would want to move there if it happens.
 
I think it's completely ridiculous that people would want WC to form their own independance. I would no longer consider them South Africans. You don't desert your country because you didn't vote for whose in power.
 
Surely a referendum, especially dealing with something as major as this, would have to come from National Government/Parliament? Either way, it is never going to happen...

Is it really that bad to have a desire to be governed by a competent Government?

Any case, if I live in a country which is not governed by a corrupt ANC, I do not really care what you call me, you can even call me a Capetonion;)
 
No i don't think it's bad on an individual basis but as a society as a whole i think it's hardly positive.

We are all South African and we should act like it. Not start sub-dividing ourselves into our little cities of indpendance.

I don't agree with majority of what the ANC does but i'm not going to just call it quits and try and form my own little patch of heaven and say bugger the rest of you.

Why not?

The Anti-ANC minority do not want to be governed by the ANC, and the ANC supporters do not want the Anti-ANC minority in "their" country, so why do we not just part our ways? It is a win-win situation.
