But they HAD more. They HAD enclosures. And the ANCYL destroyed them. What more should we do? The DA tried to provide, but the disgusting animals that is the YL refused to accept.

Let me make this clear - I dont blame the community. Some of them seem to be angry with the YL. I blame the YL for using the community for political gain.

Pringle, the chairman of sub-council 10 which includes Khayelitsha, said according to the 2007 agreement the government would install the toilets and residents would erect the surrounding structures.

The council at first told residents they would erect communal toilets for the area. Residents, however, preferred to have individual toilets. A compromise was struck and the council agreed to build the toilets while residents said they would have the surrounding structures erected.

Since then the council built 1316 toilets and the residents covered 1265 of them. Pringle said the balance of 51 remain opened and were at the centre of the current furore.

In spite of an agreement with the residents some failed to do a little bit for themselves, ie erect some form of cover. In spite of agreeing that they would be given individual toilets in exchange for erecting covers, a few turned around and accused the DA of you guess what.

Eventually the city gave in and in spite of former agreements, once again coughed up with taxpayer's funds to provide the privacy the people wanted. And what does the ANCYL do, they tear it down because they are *******s.

They had zinc partitioned toilets - these are not the Rolls Royce toilets, these were destroyed because they (or the ANCYL) want more !!!

And someone has to pay for this destruction !

I understand the anger. I am angry too. It's jsut a lot of the anger is conveyed in an unthoughtful way.

None of us know the actual budgetary circumstances that forced the City to not build enclosures. Johannesburg is supposedly a world class city, yet take a look at Sweetwaters. Is that any better? If not, why not?

What is the relevance of the quote ? The City didn't build the world class suburbs, people paid for that themselves, and some of them are foreigners. All the City does is to charge them as much as possible in rates and taxes, but you can't build free Rolls-Royce toilets from blackmailing the wealthy - it only goes so far !

And then when they built enclosures, they tore them down as "inadequate".. They were always going to find an excuse to complain. If they had built the toilets they had wanted, they would have complained that the money had been unnecessarily wasted on toilets while their houses are of worse quality than the toilets..

So.. how are the toilets in JHB squatter camp toilets? Are they awesome or what?

The city left out the enclosures because residents wanted individuals toilets attached to their homes/shacks and promised to build their own enclosures.

Sub-council 14 chairman Steven Vuba, of the DA, said: "A few individual ANCYL leaders who have toilets in their houses are trying to block progress and disrupt development in the area, especially in Ward 95. The community of Ward 95 should look at this very seriously. Such scoundrels should not be allowed to bully the community into submissiveness."

Here's how it went ;-
They were offered concrete communal toilets - they said they preferred single toilets ( at a far greater cost ).

So the DA said fine we will provide separate toilets but we can't afford to build them in concrete because you want the more expensive option.

The response was fine - we will provide walls ourselves but give us separate loos , not communal ones.

So the DA provided according to the community wishes and as I recall this was discussed with and agreed to by the ANC.

After that the DA had a rethink and decided to provide zinc walls for the loos - probably because nobody had bothered to build their own walls as per the original agreement.

The bottom line is there are now no walls - and just whose fault is that ?
