Android 2.2 (Froyo) and beyond...

Good article MR Feesh, thanx for that link.

One thing with Android I must say is, I have been very actively interested in it since before it came out...in fact, the first version I had on my phone could barely do anything...I remember I could move the clock, and change the background, but can't remember that there was even a dialer...but it was epic none the less...and now I am running Android 2.1 as my main OS on my Tytn 2, by main meaning, I really really hate using WM6.5. I just can't operate in WM anymore....it just feels so backwards. Now Windows Mobile from Version 6 to 6.1 and on to 6.5 have barely been different...the only thing I can remember changing was threaded sms...that was awesome. But Android has grown, improved and changed so much since it came out, and in leaps and bounds, more than Windows Mobile ever did...and it continues. I am very excited about Android and where it's going:-)

I read that the Desire may get 2.2 next month (late June). If that turns out to be true it may not be too long before the Desire here is upgraded...

Be it for the fact that Leaf have proven to be trustworthy with but 1 thing....taking forever to update things after the rest of the world has been updated. I wonder what it would take to get another company to become the official distributors of HTC in South Africa, a company way more capable. We need it here, but as they are the only people doing it officially, there won't be any competition except from the rogue market.

Android has always been a fast moving OS, it has gone further than a lot of other operating systems have gone in less than 2 years...

FroYo FRF72 is out. Manual instructions are here: http://androidandme.com/2010/06/news/new-android-2-2-update-for-the-nexus-one-is-available-now/

I did the upgrade this morning and it went very smoothly.

Note that this is the upgrade from the previous FRF50 upgrade. If you haven't done that upgrade there is a link in the article for that. And this is only for the Nexus One.

Here is the list of improvements that people are reporting on FRF72.

Power button working properly
Improved Flash performance
Stock browser speed increase
Increased internal storage (~ 50 MB)
Improved 3G reception

Thanks for that duncan1a, wish I had a desire now....Will have to wait for the Desired Froyo;-)

Any Nexus One users get the official FroYo OTA? I couldn't wait and manually upgraded to FRF83. (man these updates come out fast)

So would you please tell us how much better it is from the last one .

thanks
From Eclair to Froyo FRF50 was massive improvement - new features and massive speed improvements and a lot of memory was freed up.
FRF50 to 73 was some improved speed, especially in the browser (impressive considering how fast FRF50 was) and slightly better 3G and extra memory was freed up
FRF73 to 83 was minor. The power button used to sometimes not be that responsive - that was fixed.
FRF83 to 85b very minor. The browser might be a bit smoother.

I didn't try Google Wave on FroYo till 85b, but on Eclair it was unusably slow, now it works fine.

ah! and the keyboard has changed. Now you can drag up off the top of the keyboard and expand more keys for numbers and special characters

this is probably going to sound like a very noob question but why cant we just get the latest updates from Google and not through htc if we don't want sense? Is the only reason we have to get the update from htc because of sense?

I don't think so. As far as I know, this update didn't even work for the contract Nexus Ones in the US - only the ones bought for $525 - I don't see this working for a completely different phone

i know that currently you can't but im asking why do google make it that you have to rely on the manufacturer?is it do for drivers?

Ah, the Nexus One is Google's phone. They don't have the right to interfere with other phones like the Desire. Also with operator contract phones there may be conditions in the contract (like no tethering). That's why for phones sold in SA there also has to be the OK from Vodacom, MTN etc (I think)
