Errr it is, Esquire had Nexus devices even Kalahari and that's local. There's also the Orange Store and Amazon which I'm not so sure about now.

Dolby, it really is easy to get a Nexus dude. Sure - not on contract. But if you want to pay it off, grab a low limit credit card and achieve the same result.

Would actually be cool if FNB offered Google devices. We should all pester them and they might.

They claimed to be 'looking into it' with the N5. Nothing came of it, though.
 
I just hope lollipop will fix the broken SD card issue they created with KitKat. I bought a new Samsung TAB S 10.5, and an expensive 64GB SD card....it is virtually useless, can't read and write much to it. I thought it was the card, so I bought an even more expensive Samsung Evo 64GB SD card. It is even worse - can't even create folders using "my files". This is all supposed to be a security measure brought in with KitKat. It would not be too bad if they sold devices with bigger built-in memory.....but 16GB is the only size they sell their new 'top of the range' tablet in. Definitely way too small, with an SD card that is crippled by Android.

Spec wise, they were all very good when released.
Vanilla Android copes much better on lessor Android that the bloated Sammys etc...
I still use all my Nexus devices and no slow down. In fact, they get better with each new update if the OS.

EDIT: If you were referring to suppliers, you can get through Esquire. Imports are not hard though.

Point I was making though, is the non Google guys mess up the release cycle. It is not Android. And there are ways around it if someone wants the quick updates like Apple. It's not Androids fault.

i was able to run kitkat on my N1 with some obvious tinkering. i would bet the developers will manage to get lollipop on it as well.

That sounds odd, my tablet Z or my S4 doesn't have that problem. Sure both only have 32 gig cards.
 
Android One devices will get the update just like Nexus devices
 
The release of new android versions is also not only dependant on the manufacturers. Once Samsung and the like have finished adding their own software to it and made sure it works for their devices, it is made available to the Cell companies. Then Vodacom, MTN, CellC and TM have to test it on their network and add their sill startup screen (and presumably internet / mms settings and so on). This is where the real delay comes in. Because they are also lazy, they only do this with updates for the most popular phones. So the new update might be available for your phone, but because there are not a lot of them on your network or there is a newer version out you are out of luck. Rather install CM or the like, their updates are much quicker.

That's mostly for OTA updates I think, once the manufacturer releases an update you can download and flash it.

That is for OTA updates yes. But that is the only update most people will get. Flashing anything else voids your warranty and is too complicated for most people. And if you have to go through the trouble of flashing it, I would rather put something else on than the Samsung version.

Samsung devices (S4 and up) have a Knox flag that gets triggered when you flash a custom rom or bootloader. That flag is permanently set, and shows when you boot into recovery. Your warranty is void when that flag is set.

But not when you flash the an update from Samsung. Unlocking the bootloader normally voids your warranty.

Even the older phones do that. On my S2 if you flash it shows a yellow triangle on startup. There are ways to remove it, but if something happens to your phone and Vodacom or whoever sees you have custom firmware on they will void your warranty.
