What would you use to flash the firmware? Why is downgrading not allowed?

You use Odin to flash it. Or KIES. Samsung does not allow downgrades, since you might downgrade to a firmware that is rootable or buggy.

Also for cross flashing Vodacom and generic firmware, they don't care. As long as the warranty flag by Knox is intact they are fine.

And most of the time Vodacom will deny your repair due to water damage in anycase.

This shouldn't be news to anyone really, the Samsung threads on here are filled with the Knox and flashing issues.

I think it has more to do with them having a lot less devices to worry about, and most of the iphones run off the same OS I think. So they only have to test one (or a few) build. With Android they have to test the build for each device.

They because they don't have multiple SKU's for the different networks. So all updates that would require testing can be done on their end. Google are doing the same thing now with the Nexus 6.

So this is the thread for Android Lollipop, and people are complaining about not being able to easily (read: via contract) buy a Nexus device?

Most devices launched in the past year or two will get Android 5. And even cheapies likes the Moto E will get it.

The most interesting aspects of the OS, other than the new design, is that is now natively supports USB audio out, and has a much better Camera API. I can see the Nexus 5, in particular, really benefiting from the improved API.

yeah saw that but as it's been mentioned it's not ready for release and touchwiz makes it very laggy

With numbers you know version is the latest. Is BarOne newer than Kitkat? BarOne you ask ? Exactly. But 3 is earlier than 4

yup.
It was just a very very early preview.
Can't wait to see what it looks like on my phone when it finally gets released though.
Still waiting for updates that Samsung released around 4 months ago.

Not quite.

The initial comment was a 'wish' of Android version being available on phones a few days/weeks after release, similar to Apple. A reply was that it was easy to buy a Nexus that can do that.

That's when the debate started on how easy it really was to get hold of a Nexus if wanted

Even the older phones do that. On my S2 if you flash it shows a yellow triangle on startup. There are ways to remove it, but if something happens to your phone and Vodacom or whoever sees you have custom firmware on they will void your warranty.

Not so, the yellow triangle is due to the flash counter which can easily be reset. There is no known way to reset the KNOX flag (it's a flag, not a counter - it's either 0 or 1), some theories suggest that it could be an electronic fuse.

And the response was correct- if you want updates a few weeks after the updated OS has been released, get a Nexus device. Google can't force OEMs to integrate the new OS layer with the customised aspects unique to each vendor, and have it shipping within a few weeks to most of their devices.

Just as Apple has far fewer devices to support, so does Google directly- they only have the Nexus and Google Play editions to support. So yeah, it makes sense that the Google release cycle is similar in time frame to Apple's.

I know they can't force - which is why it was a wish

Perhaps Google/Android could develop in conjunction with the makers before announcing to the public? Even if only with the current and previous flagship (S4, S5, Z1, Z2 etc). There must be something they can do to speed up the timing.

But it may just be a pipe dream
