Android Auto (Google Assistant) vs Apple Carplay (Siri)

I'm almost happy now. By disabling "Permit drawing over other apps" in AA I can have it running on the car and still use TomTom Go on my phone in the cradle.

Yeah this is a very good showcase of Google not being nearly as open or customizable as people like to think.

But surely your built in navigation would trump needing this work around?

I haven't checked since the last service the other day but the maps seemed dated. Also they don't show local speed limits.

Used both AA and Car Play extensively over the past year, while car play looks nicer it is unpleasant to use. Siri has to be the dumbest assistant alive and apple maps cannot touch Google Maps or Waze on AA. I just wish Waze's interface was a bit more HD.

I see there is loads of hate for the interface, barely use it. AA's voice commands are great and 90% of the time it starts navigation to work/home the moment I go into the maps screen, finding music on Play music is super simple and Tune In radio for when I feel oldscool.

Cant wait for it to go wireless though, could live without plugging my phone in every time

Google allows Android Auto phones to be unlocked while being connected to car

If you are an Android Auto user, you must be knowing that it's not possible to use the phone when it's connected to Google's in-car infotainment service. Well, that's changed now, as the company has lifted this restriction.

Yes, now you can just swipe up and unlock your phone even when it's connected to Android Auto.

Google says the change is aimed at allowing passengers to use the phone (without causing any distraction to the driver). Not only that, even drivers can use their phone now when the car isn't in motion

What do you think about this new change? Do you feel it's helpful? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Google Assistant does seem generally better but the failure to call people or give directions to them still makes it utterly retarded in my view and there Siri wins every time.

I think Google Assistant has the "local" advantage which makes it seem much more clever than Siri but isn't outrightly so.

Apple Maps I have to agree.

True but it keeps wanting to go back to the AA splash screen

Really? I asked google to take me to the airport the other day and it plotted a course to OR Tambo... I'm in PE.

Apple maps got a bum rap in the beginning, and quite rightly so, but it has improved a lot imo.

AA's home screen is a shambles.

Well by my example if I ask AA to take me to Makro it knows what that is.

Apple Maps and Siri has no clue.

Does Apple Maps know what OR Thambo is because that's a good start. I kind of don't expect either to know PE's Airport.

I have however fires up my iPhone 5S with a Sim so will test Carplay more actively. I'm just going by my in hand experiences with Siri from now more than two months ago.

If I tell it to take me to PE Airport it knows where to go, so it should be able to deduce a) that I'm in PE, and b) that "the airport" would refer to the one closest to me and not one 1100km away.

For sure.

But that is a pretty big ticket item and you get them across the world.

But does it know where Spar or Makro is?

When I asked it to take me to makro it gave me a long dissertation on macro photography :o

Being back on iPhone and being on leave with new baby and all have been spending a lot more time with CarPlay.

So some thoughts.

1. The permanently left side menu is utterly retarded for anyone on a right hand drive vehicle and downright unsafe. I’ve made a feature request to Apple to offer and inverted option but doubt anything would come of it.

In this regard Android Autos central menu system makes a lot more sense.

2. Apple Maps is actually pretty great. I’ve screwed myself over twice by not trusting it and then headed straight into stand still traffic like an idiot. It’s also a lot more aware of common places and I’m yet to find something lacking but I’ve not searched for anything too obscure. I’m sure Google Maps will still win overall for that.

I’ve also got a new off ramp close to my place which Apple Maps isn’t even aware of from satellite imagery and definitely routing.

3. Not that I’d even need it but the fact that it marks your car’s parked location when you unplug it is just such a typical Apple feature where the subtle little things matter.

4. Siri kicks Google Assistant’s ass. I’ve purposely gone one day entirely hands free and it worked flawlessly although touch is of course faster in many cases. Also it can direct and call to my contact which AA couldn’t do.

Only thing I miss is the ability to say “Hey Siri” in the car.
