Please direct me to any existing threads on the topic that mentions solutions to this problem, please.

We need Call-Recording capability as we extensively use it for quality control on customer service and training.

As you are aware - between Google and Android they changed the privacy rules with the new Android Pie version, and now we can't utilise call recording.

Any hints or advice would be seriously appreciated, as well as background knowledge to include in a paper I am writing on this?

Thank you guys.

Dirk

Dirk, there is no way around this on Android devices. You will need to look at buying devices that do support native recording. I believe Xiaomi is one of them. Our company has ordered one for testing. We decided to dump Samsung, which does not offer native recording. We will no longer be making use of Android devices that does not come with it.

Let me know if anything changes.

We have found one that works and has caller-id, but it comes at R60/pm

Cube ACR works and is free, premium with a few extra features is R26/3months

Cube ACR does not work on all Android devices. We have tested it on the Note 8 and 9. It records outgoing perfectly, but incoming cannot be heard. Some people say it works on their devices, but I have yet to find such person who can actually show me this. One person claimed it work, when I listened to the recording the incoming call was also extremely soft. So, basically it does not work.

It's working for VoLTE calls only on my P30 Pro.

Hence the reason I said he should look at devices that support it. Do tests and make sure that it is recording both ways in perfect clear quality. Also, consider when there is no VoLTE, what then? Devices with native call recording, able to record any call, over any network, anywhere is better suited for businesses who require it. Something most Android devices lost since the launch of Pie.

Best option still is not to upgrade to Pie at all. If there are no other option, be careful before you chose your next device. This is the reason why we will not be buying any Samsung device again, and this far seems no Huawei devices either. Once we get to test Xiaomi, we will be looking at purchasing them for the business.

I agree. Chose Android Oreo phone and do not upgrade to Pie. Or wait When Huawei breaks with Google FoolPlay Services and release their own version of phone OS.

For now Huawei Y7 is the only 2019 phone shipped with Android Oreo. R199p/m on Telkom. Check it out, it is a good phone with long standing battery. https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/huawei-y7-2019.1011372/

The moment either Huawei or Samsung breaks ties with Android I will be going back to them again. Google just managed to fu**up brilliant business devices and turned them into huge bricks to play games with.

Once again, Huawei Y7 2019. There is a settings to disable automatic firmware downloading and updating. Do it before Pie is available on this phone. :)

Or just buy Xiaomi as Lew has said and get a 2 for 1 deal: updates and call recording

Incoming calls are recorded fine on my S10+ using ACR.

Had an issue with incoming calls being very soft on my S9+ but this does not seem to be the case with the S10+ and incoming calls. My voice and caller's voice is recorded at the same volume.

Is it not laws that force Google to change some stuff, or is it really Google that makes bad decisions.

It is. But a blanket decision is costing them, unfortunately. Call recording is not outlawed in all countries.

Call recording has been an issue for years.

Call recording on Pie is only blocked on only non-rooted handsets.
Root your phone and call recording works fine on Pie.

Third party call recording API's have been in-use since Marshmallow.
Google now blocked them on non-rooted phones.

& I actually doubt that it's a Google-only decision.
Carriers have A LOT of say on what gets included/excluded on stock ROM's.,

Just look at how US carriers make their clients pay for tethering and roaming.

I met a guy up North (in Africa) who used a Sprint handset.
His company paid his roaming rates while he was in Africa - which was (per month) about equal to my salary.
crazy.

When a business purchases 20+ Note 8's or Note 9's every year, you do not want your staff to go about rooting the devices, rendering apps such as online banking not working and in the process voiding your warranties on the devices.

If you are interested in or forced into making use of Android Pie, the solution is easy. Drop big make devices such as Huawei and Samsung who no longer support native call recording. Look at alternative handsets that still has it enabled on Pie. Like us, you will save yourself a ton of money in the process.
