Android completely dominates the smartphone market

Really surprised windows phone never took off, seemed like the future , integration with windows machines.

Windows on your PC , windows on your phone in sync.
Apple got it right somewhat.

They cocked it up and was too late. Now they're cocking up Windows aswell. Installed Windows 10 on a PC this morning and it installed Candy Crush, Farmville 2 and Netflix aswell :wtf:

I am a big fan of Android, but so much dominance is not good.

Yeah they probably have near 100% dominance at the mid to low end of the market while Apple still gives them sleepless nights near the top. The top end is really Samsung, emerging Chinese makers & Apple and the Chinese are cannibalizing Samsung.

Yup.

No one actually wants the bottom end - very little margin there - Nokia had that for ages and look what happened.

The other problem with the bottom end is that those are usually older versions of Android and those manufacturers don't/won't/can't update to the latest versions which is a nightmare for Google since security vulnerabilities aren't addressed.

Solution for more competition is probably not in an alternative to Android, but to build something better on top of it. The big manufacturers only add bloat, but retain Google Apps, which is the main tie-in to Google. Maybe the Blackberry guys can build their own secure ecosystem on top of basic Android?
I am hardly an OS guru, but do I have the basics right?
