Android G1 or iPhone?

Yep, I agree that there is alot for Symbian and it was useful while I had it but I am getting android and happy for it myself. Talk about sluggish - you can't beat Symbian for sluggish IMO - maybe it was just my model of phone, but it was slow.

If you run Symbian on decent hardward it is awesome. And with decent I mean a phone that runs at half the speed of those HTCs and iPhones with there high Mhz CPUs and BloatOS™

The pinnacle of speed, size and functionality as far as mobile OSes are concerned is Series40 from Nokia.

Series60 is the Nokia UI that runs on top of Symbian, a true smartphone OS that can multitask, copy and paste and do most of the things you expect from a OS.

Series40 is a non-smartphone OS that runs on most low cost Nokia phones. It can do basic multitasking (play music in the background) but you cannot have numerous application running at the same time. It also runs only Java applications and cannot install Symbian applications.

Last time I checked the firmware of a Series40 phone was typically about 20MB (S40 FP3) compared to 120MB for Series60 (Symbian 9.2). BloatOS devices like the iPhone are in excess of 250MB. I am not sure how huge WinMo is.

Ok - it's just that my s60 phone was dog slow...

Is the Android available locally yet? Where could I purchase one maybe :> I like it! :D

Older Symbian phones was crap and it lacked a lot of basic things found on Series40 phones, like repeat alarms, auto-keypad lock, 60minute voice recording, audio messaging, and responsiveness. Even phones as recent as the N73 and N81 sucked a bit.

On when the N82 arrived did I see a reason to move from Series40 to Series60. However, the start up times on Symbian phones will always be a lot more than on Series40 phones due the the size and nature of the OS.

The worst Symbian flavour Nokia ever made was Series80 on the 9300 and 9500 bricks. You had to unclip your battery at least once a week to hard reset the phone cause it was soooo buggy. However Nokia took what was good from it and implemented it on Series60 for the new E90. It is also taking tips and tricks from Series40 and implementing that on Series60 and vice-versa.

I've heard Symbian is a pain in the butt to develop for and the support is not great - I've heard the opposite of Andriod...

Back on topic - hardly anecdotal but still pertinent - http://www.macworld.com/article/137929/2009/01/androidvsiphone.html

One reoccurring complaint about the G1 - and one that was apparently fixed on the iphone with the last update - is battery life. Have they improved on that? Obviously you can carry around a spare battery (just like you can add a battery to the iphone) but that's hardly ideal.

What have you seen and experienced ? I'm not talking about hearsay.

Well I've developed an app for Android and it's basic java and of course everything is an open book. Symbian is only now going os and I assume it will take time... people have been complaining about having to dev in C++... have a look at this blog:
http://mobile.antonypranata.com/2005/12/19/why-is-symbian-os-development-very-difficult/

This is nothing new BTW, people have been complaining for some time... google it.

*EDIT* My G1 phone has just arrived! Yay!!! :)
I'll post pics in a min...

Sorry for not posting yet - I'ts been crazy here work wise and I haven't had much time with the phone. I have unlocked it now and am using it on Cell C... in a nutshell I am very happy with it and will post a more complete review in the blogs section over the weekend possibly...

It's the most FUN phone I have used to date... but i won't be comparing it to other phones, I'll just give you my take on it.
