If you take a look at the price of HTC phones at Leaf stores, you will see that the prices there are not reasonable.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the G1 pricing once Windoze Mobile licensing is no longer included in the price compared to the pricing of the rest of the HTC handsets which do run Windoze Mobile.

I don't think the G1 will sell here, because by the time it gets to SA, the next generation will already have been announced or even be available overseas.

It won't be called the G2 though, as this naming scheme has been trademarked by T-Mobile.

Uhm, SA already has loads of phones that can compete against the iPhone. My dad has an iPhone and I have an E71. In my opinion, the E71 is far superior.

Vodacom are going to be the distributors right? This will be a joke, the pricing will be like the Iphone then IMO.
I could be wrong, but AFAIK Leaf is the official distributor in South Africa for all HTC handsets, maybe v3g can clarify including whether there will be a conflict between Vodafone and Leaf in the future over sole distribution rights for HTC phones in SA.

I thought it was said a while back that Vodacom would be the distributor? I could be wrong though. The Iphone was a fiasco that should not happen again
I ignored both the iPhone and iPhone 3G launches completely, so I don't know what happened there, and I careth not about iPhone.

My understanding is that Leaf has distribution rights for HTC phones in SA, not sure if it is sole distributor rights though, best to see what v3g has to say about this - I have not p.m.'ed him about this thread but maybe he will see this or maybe not - it's not important just a matter of interest.

It will be probably called the htc dream, its just exclusive to vodacom nothing more. I'd rather wait for a Htc's successor to the G1 or another phone from another manufacturer coz of googles recent cupcake update which rectifys the G1's flaws. Rumors going around Motorola is spending alota time & cash making a social networking device based on android. hopefully this phone will be myn by the end of this year.

had the good fortune of using a G1 when I was in the UK last week. Fantastic phone. imho superior to the iphone in functionality. The open source applications store is really thriving and there is not much u cannot download for free. feels extremely good in the hand and the keyboard (yes what the iphone lacks severely) is one of the best ive ever used, can rival even the best blackberry for that. buuuut... they just dont have the marketing prowess of jobs' team. Due simply to that, it wont sell anywhere near the iphone.

That and vodacom will suck us dry again with pricing much aligned to the iphone. btw you can get it free on a 25 pound a month contract from t mobile uk...with unlimited data! how far behind we are.

Just saw it :)

Good question on where Leaf stands with regards to the G1. As it's not a formal *HTC* unit, I suspect they won't be distributing it. Just like they don't distribute other HTC OEM devices.

On the other hand, Google have ZERO experience in distributing hardware, so hopefully they'll outsource it to someone like Leaf. I'll ask.

We saw the problems created when a manufacturer gets into a new field with Apple engaging the worldwide mobile operators, dictating many facets.

Hopefully Google will learn from this, but (in all reality), they have even less experience than Apple in this field.

Time will tell.

Iphone for musos, g1 for geeks

I am expecting my G1 to arrive soon - couldn't wait for SA to get its act together... got it for R3000 on ebay incl deliver - there are PLENTY going at this price. Iphone is a fashion statement, G1 is NOT but G1 is uber useful and O/S is open... it just works so well with the net...

I played with the G1 and I love the OS, there's so much of applications available for it. I hope there will be other manufacturers following the Android route.

I'm eyeballing one as well, sadly this one is white. You getting a black one?

according to me it is a no brainer, the G1 is next gen compared to the iphone in the fact that it is way way more customizable, surely not a fashion phone..but way more bussiness orientated (hey compared to the iphone atleast you can copy/paste without assistance from a 3rd party application)..but my next phone is the Nokia N97, its tottally going to anihalite all the iphone in features ..one to look forward to :)

A significant part of the success of Apple's products is the fact that Apple makes both the hardware and the hardware.

So let me get this straight. They make both the hardware and also the hardware. Guess we still have some new year hangovers going on over here.
