Depends from what angle you look at it. If your an investor Apple is better and wining as you make more money, if you an end user Android is better and wining because it gives you more money in your pocket.

And last time I check you and me are end users no?

As for the free phones, I am sure they make money via contract deals but I can promise you its not the same profit Apple is taking home.

Problem being that one angle is objective/statistical and one is subjective/biased and I'll give you a guess which is which.
 
Guys, "free" to you or me doesn't mean the manufacturers don't get anything for the phones. They get the revenue from the networks who subsidise the phones to hook you into a two year contract.
 
I'm getting a 32gb 4s from vodacom for R595 per month. That includes 240 anytime minutes 500mb of data and 100 smses.

Not bad value if you ask me.
 
mmmm, I see the Talk 240 is R430 per month. I was told pay in on the device is R4 per month so 500mb of data and 100 smses costs R161...??? (Total cost quoted R595-00)

I got a Motorola Deft on RBM for R250 pm, am getting 200 anytime minutes, 500mb of data and 100sms. I then sold the Defy for R3000 and bought a SGS2 while on holiday overseas for R3500.

I am saving R345 per month or R8280 over 24 months compared to you. I spent R500 once off and have pretty much the same contract (well 40 minutes less). In terms of phone, well its one of the comparable Android flagships.

Good value? Think again...

Well in the similar line, I bought my SE Play online for only R2000 so you dont have to physically go over seas in person to get it ;)

That's besides the point. Most people have a friend who can bring them one. Even if not, you can get the phone locally for R5500 or R4200 imported (after shipping and taxes). That's a pay in of R2000 or R1200 while achieving a saving of R8280, or R6280/R7080 net.

No need to think again...

And even without the hassle you could just take the Defy or LG Optimus Black which aren't bad phones and safe the full R8280...

If we were to do the same exercise using the 32gb 4S as an example (one android phone, the HTC Desire is enough for me):

R9500 retail cost of a new 4S.

Sell the Motorola for R3000 acquired on the R250 package leaves a pay in of R6500. Still a net saving of R1780-00 over 24 months but not forgetting the 40 minutes extra the 240 package offers. Add to that selling the 4S in two years time, provided it's been properly cared for roughly R4000 and it's pretty much 6 of the one half a dozen of the other.

Or am I missing something here....??

Main point being the 4S is way overpriced locally... And the vodacom contract is a rip off. Come on, R600 a month...
 
The 4S I'm getting now actually replaces the HTC HD2 I got in March 2009.

Back then the pay in on the HD2 was R154 per month. I've been raped on this package, was so keen back then to get the HD2. It's a Talk 200s I think (per second billing) with 200 sms bundle and 100mb data per month. Costs me R709 per month!!!!

Some more useless information:
I ended up swapping the HD2 for a HTC Desire. The HD2 was too big and I wanted a droid device. I swapped with a fellow forumite, wag.

So... you do a bit of Gumtree swapponomics and somehow that makes Android better value than the iPhone? You can't compare a bunch of shady deals you do to direct contract pricing. What you actually have is a Motorola Defy for r250pm. End of story. You could also have bought a 2ndhand iPhone4 overseas for r3500.

Yes I can. In fact, I just did. Except none of the deals were shady :D

Funny thing is, some people on here are perfect examples of people showing the typical behaviour of someone who got a bad deal or bought something they know was overpriced, yet won't admit it or want it to be true.

Keep convincing yourself its a good deal ;)

Many people I know would just looooove that HD2, you got the short end there. HD2 is the only phone I know that can run Windows Mobile 6.5 and dual boot Android or you can upgrade to Windows Phone 7.5

Yeah. At the time there was no indication that android would run on the device.

I suspected it was a question of time but that and the size of the device was reason enough to change.

I never regretted the decision. The desire was a pleasant enough experience over all.
