Android tops Blackberry in US

And free email and browsing, plus a phone that just works, properly

All phones "just work". Except Apples ironically, where you have to sync it first. But yes the SA networks are too retarded to provide proper data plans so they're using that to push the RIMjobs.

All Blackberry has to do is release BBM for Android and Apple App store... and it's Game Over!

exactly! which is why i dont get why RIM is releasing it for android and ios.. They're giving away the only thing they have going for them.

This will not work...all BBM usage is carried over RIMS infrastructure...every SP has a pipe linking to the europe NOC....and UK i think...
It's not as easy as just an application...
I also think SP's gets shafted with RIM since they make no income wrt BBM and internet/email etc....
RIM is also FOS when it comes to signing up with them...

Appropriate solution for South African realities. Why it is also doing well in places like India, Middle- and Far East. Affordable smartphone solution for the masses who are heavy users of social networks. Easy to use, very reliable, hard to break, does the everyday communications priorities very well.

Blackberry has also seen a rather large and successful uptake within the family unit since it provides an easy and cost effective way for families to stay in touch. Since the BIS service is flat-rated it also provides a means for parents to curb spending on mobile data by the ever increasing digital needs of their kids. Both of these are in turn (IMHO) responsible for the drop in BIS service levels. I believe that the service is rather oversubscribed and the infrastructure can not handle the load. But, like I said, this is merely my opinion.

With iOS and BlackBerry OS life is simple. iOS 4.2 will on 11 March be updated to iOS 4.3 ... simple. All Apple phone and tablet owners (excl. older non-supported devices) can see forward to this one well known event and all knows what is involved and what needs to be done. With Android it is a frikkin mess that requires geek skills/knowledge. Motorola ... Samsung ... HTC ... LG ... all dealing with things like updates in their own way on their own time (and quite possibly never for your specific device). One must be in the know to know what's going on. With Apple the owner/user just goes with the flow = what most want. Don't be surprised to see many jumping to Android now - mostly out of curiosity - return to iOS and BlackBerry ... and if/when Apple releases the much talked about and highly anticipated (more affordable) iPhone "Nano" the game will change completely ... as it did with iPhone and iPad.

Don't hold your breath for a "cheaper" iPhone. It is not in Apple's nature to deliver low cost products. They never have, and never will. Their ethos is all about superior user experience with superior hardware and materials. Their "cheapest" products are still allot more expensive than similar products offered by the competition (see Macbook White). So yes, many people will be jumping on the Android wagon after many years with Blackberry or iOS, however I do not think many of them will be regretting the decision.

they've set the price on the iPad low enough that companies like Samsung are scrambling to match it. WHo would have thought that day would ever happen. ;)

Hugo_ZA, I still believe a lower end iPhone is planned. Lower end does not mean cheap. It can still be more expensive than the competitors in that segment but it will offer a solution in a segment that Apple currently does not serve with the high end iPhone. I maintain that the day Apple tackles the lower segments all hell will break lose for those now ruling those segments. With iPod Apple serves multiple segments, and I see this coming with phones too. Then those who currently cannot reach up to the iPhone will be bable to do so ... and then we will have a true picture of what people actually want instead of what they have to take with the budget available.

If Apple were to launch an iPhone "Nano" today at 60% the price of the iPhone 4 the world will go mad. No factory will be able to meet the demand ... and the competitors will suffer big time. Apple knows this ... and the time will come I'm sure.

Granted it would be welcomed commercially. However what would they to have sacrifice in both form and function to achieve this? Low quality screen? Less RAM? Cheaper materials? The thing is that Apple, and more importantly Steve Jobs, doesn't like doing cheap. Several products have been delayed in the past or canceled because they did not meet his high standards.

Hugo_ZA, lower segment does not equate to "cheap". Can do something very smart for less without quality compromises. If Jobs/Apple doesn't do cheap then the iPod Nano cannot be considered cheap although it is in a lower segment than the iPod Touch, for example. The Nano's functionality is less, and it is smaller, but the quality is still good, and this can be done with a phone too (trust Apple to come up with something unexpected). In my mind it is possible without going "cheap".

A good quality all plastic iPhone without a retina display, gyroscope, and GPS (as examples) is possible, not so?

Ok, so why did they not just leave the iPhone 3Gs on the market alongside the iPhone 4?

Because they want something fresh and "now" as is the norm for Apple (new look/feel every 12 months). Lower segment device but with the latest design philisophy/standards. Apple always wants to set the trend so old will never do.

...and hence cheap will never do. :-)
