Android Useful Apps

You do know that xbmc was not available via the app store before now?

Yes, which does not discount from my point in anyway, thousands of users using XMBC on android, switching to kodi on the play store. It's simply upgrade mentality. If an pp you were using was not on the play store and then an upgrade of said app went to the play store, would you not upgrade to it? As SOON as it came out?

So they got 100k downloads in a month, that simply means 100k people had xbmc installed on one or more android devices they owned already.

This would be impressive if there was no XBMC for android prior to kodi and this was the very first initial release of the app, but its not, XBMC aka kodi has been around for over a year already, so people have been using it.

You are actually right. Who are they to celebrate a little bit of happiness, and use this obvious non event as a marketing ploy. How dare they. They don't deserve any kind of publicity to further the usage of the hard work that they have put it. You know what?

Fck those guys!

Not at all, those are all the android users that just switched from xbmc to kodi after the app switch. With the millions of Android devices out there, I would be surprised if even one of those installs is a new user, those are effectively all upgrade users.

These are guys who upgraded tablets, laptops, virtual machines, Raspberry Pi's, set top boxes and even TV's.

So no it is not impressive that they replaced xbmc with kodi and every xbmc did the logical thing and upgrades whichever android device they had xbmc on to now use kodi instead, it is after all what ever windows, Linux and Mac user did when kodi came out for them.
I disagree. I find it impressive that an app gets between 100k-500k installs in its first couple of weeks on the play store - even if most of those installs are from existing users. These users would have had to know about its availability on the play store in the fist place.

Not all Android based set top boxes, VMs, Pi's, tablets & phones has access to the Play Store by default -these figures would exclude those who have not installed/hacked these devices in order to have the play store...

But arguing with someone about what is/is not impressive to them is probably not the most productive thing to do so let's leave at that :P

Any recommendations for a replacement for Fleksy keyboard, it serves my needs but the built in English dictionary is useless.

Edit. Oops is this maybe the wrong thread to ask this?

1. Swype (and a pox on that other swift-something-or-other 'board) and 2. Yes it is, the thread you want to be in is this one
I've found Swiftkey to be superior to Swype for quite some time now. I used to sing the praises of Swype from the hilltops, but after randomly deciding to revisit Swiftkey I discovered that the app had been drastically improved. Swiftkey also has far superior themes and better prediction imo.

After being used to the current version of Swiftkey, giving Swype a go for a few minutes was quite unpleasant.

I'm a button presser not a swiper, those are better optimised for swiping, why Fleksy would have such rubbish spelling is beyond me.

Installed SwiftKey, Fleksy has some nice features but SwiftKey does kick it's ass properly from the point of view of spelling and autocorrect!

Wow Fleksy is useless, I'm actually getting English spelling now, Fleksy was messing with my head every 2nd word was some weird autocorrection.

Are there any tips for using swipe on bigger screens like the note, you end up swiping from one end of the screen to the other.

I'm currently using google keyboard. For some reason I'm mistyping a lot more in Swiftkey than in google keyboard. And the swiping started to give me completely wrong words as well. Needed a change and google keyboard is serving my needs well.

You can make the keyboard smaller or have it undocked close to one of the edges? On bigger screens maybe the thumb keyboard is more suited, but then you don't have swiping.

I'm being different! lol..

I'm trying the Ginger keyboard & actually quite enjoying it...

Trying out Ginger, one thing that I like over Swftkey is no autospace. However, I am not seeing predictions, and Switkey's long press characters are very useful.

Been using it for a day now. And I approve
