Android versus Apple iOS

Well so far I mus say that I am not impressed with my Samsung Galaxy S.
I love Android and what it can do, but the implementation of software with hardware is problematic.
The battery life is absolutely pathetic and the phone is sluggish and frequently locks up.
People call me on my landline and yell at me cos they have been trying to reach me on my cellphone, and then I will realise that the phone has once again locked up and lost it's network connectivity.

How do other Android phones compare?
Cos I think Samsung has a long way to go here.

Haven't had any problems like that on my HTC, aside from the battery life: I get 1.5 days, which is pathetic compared to feature phones that can last over a week. But that's expected considering how much bigger my screen is and how much more my phone is being used all day.

Regarding patents, they were initially allowed to promote innovation. The result however, is the opposite. Anybody who thinks "arranging icons on a grid" should be a valid patent shouldn't be allowed to be a decision maker in whether patents are granted at all.

Just imagine if this system existed hundreds of years ago and somebody patented "round wheels"...

Compare that with Android which has more than 500,000 devices activated daily. At $5 each, that’s $2.5 million for Microsoft’s coffers each day.

Wow...so HTC activates more than 500,000 units a day? (Unless I'm missing something.)

This is why i'm getting a distaste for companies like Apple and Microsoft. They hold back innovation and when they lose to a competitor, they resort to dirty tactics. Google will outgrow them both, just watch.

yeah, but they got damn good products.

as for the Android patent thing, I think google gonna wade in and than Apple gonna run scared.

No. Android activates > 500,000 a day, but not HTC. HTC are not the oly ones that ship android phones.

Ai, OomD.
Sarcasm is a little hard to read in typing, I apologize. :)
My point is, MS only benefits from HTC activations -not ALL Android activations. The author claims that HTC activates more than 500,000 devices...see where I'm going with this? ;)

They only pay for units sold inside USA. The patient claims have no bearing/Claim outside of America so HTC dont have to pay Microsoft for phones sold in SA or EU for example.

I will not claim to be an expert in patents but I'm not clueless about patents either. From what you have said, unless I'm mistaken, patents and copyrights are the same but I disagree with you. Your reference to software copyright is across elsewhere in the world but this is USA we are talking about which recognises software patents as opposed to software copyright. If one breaks the law, they have to pay for it, it's as simple as that. Android phone manufacturers are free to sell their products anywhere in the world but USA if they wish to avoid that conflict of interest. Based on what the USA says about patents, I still remain in support of Apple and MS in that market until they revise their laws.
Thanks for your reference to wikipedia but I usually take what is said with a punch of salt, depending on last update. In any case it's the best we have.

They the same in that they both designed to protect the original and that is about it.

Software is the same as music, or books. It should be only protected via copyright sothat a blatant copy of my work is against the law I agree if you copy my work that should be punished But not if you have the same idea as me to align 9 icons in a 3 x 3 row in a square as that is something that is common sense and practical not Unique.

Trust me having software in USA becomes a nightmare. Any code you write will break some patients somewhere. only when you start making a killing will you know this as that is when the vultures come sweeping in demanding a piece of the pie.

Ok, I get that.

Am I the only one that sees this?
500,000 x $5 = $2.5mill
The guy that wrote this article claims that MS is getting $2.5mill from HTC, when in actualy fact it's waaaaay less than that.
Sigh, can I put it any simpler...or do I just totally SUCK at the point I'm trying to make. :erm:

EDIT : Am I reading this correctly? The above IS what the writer is claiming, right?

You are right, that is what the author claims that Microsoft is getting $2.5 mil each day but in fact its a hell of a lot less. HTC for example will sell only 1 million phones in USA but 4 million in the world but all 5 million phones would need to be activated via Google. That is if HTC's portion was 5 out of the 15 sold that month. So HTC would pay only $5 million USD for the month to Microsoft. All the other manufacturers will have to do their own deals and pay there portions, depending on if they told to do so via court.

O.K! So ONLY -for argument's sake - $5mill a month...as opposed to the author's $2.5mill per day!
Author-guy...you're wrong.
There...I said it. :D

Droid user, but wouldn't mind an iPhone tbh - a good friend of mine swore by Android for years, but can't pry him away from his iPhone 4 now. He says it's amazing...

The reality is that Android is now available in so many different devices that it is far easier for consumers to buy an Android phone than it is to buy an iPhone

I don't think this is applicable as the sales figures show something different!

Depends on the phone really. On my crap Huawei, certainly, on my shiny new Galaxy S II, not so much.

Same with my DHD + SPB Shell 3D.

I have had many iPhone junkies go holy cow, I want one when phone was demoed.

Personally I was an iPhone user from 2008 to 2010 when I got my 1st Desire. I can say if I compare iOS to cheap android phones I would pick Apple every time(Even an iPhone 3GS is better than a Samsung ace), but on High end Android phones iOS doesn't even come close.

That said, if you a game junky stick to Apple. Android does have some nice games and some of the best games do jump OS some like Fruit Ninja THD is even better than the Apple versions but Android games if not free(Ad Support) is normally twice the price. If you want to use your phone/tablet as a tool more than a game console then the balance tips into the Android camp as they focus more on functionality rather than design.

Thats the thing about android, there are so many different android phones. So its natural that some of them will be cheap and some will be awesome. my new phone, an LG Optimus 2X, is super fast, and has features not found on iPhones, such as HDMI out and 1080p video recording, as well as a dual core processor.

I dont think that the Android name is well known outside of geek circles though. Ask your non geek friends what Android is, they have no clue. But they all know what an iPhone is. They might buy a Samsung Galaxy SII, because they know its a high end phone, but they dont care about what OS it runs.

Any dual core Android phone+ 2.3 Android should have almost no slowdown. Personally I can't wait for end of next year, Quad Core phones with 720p screens running Ice Cream sandwich and up? Looking very good.
