Its so they get used to humans and allow them closer than they normally would.

I would think it's about the thrill of the hunt ( wow reference anyone? ) but I don't get what is so thrilling about killing a static animal from hundreds of meters away.

Yes, because others will see better value in making sure they survive, the ones seeing the biggest value now is the poachers. The ones who want to keep them for tourism or hunting have to spend vast amount to protect them, eventually it becomes unaffordable/unsustainable and only the state can do it and they might get disinterested too.

Rationalising keeping vast resources locked up for the sake of an animal is a great ideal but in the real world here on earth only opens the gates for exploitation.
