I get that this country needs to take strong action against any form of crime and especially crimes against women and children.

I am however angered that my 15 year old kid has to pledge the following at school:

I pledge:
- To uphold the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
- To abide by the laws of the country.
- To respect the rights of others irrespective of age, race, sex or sexual orientation.
- Not to rape or commit any form of sexual harassment, abuse or violence.
- To report any form of wrongdoing to authorities.
- To honour the responsibilities that come with these rights and to be a good citizen.

Seriously? Minors are now asked to pledge that they will not rape or commit any form of crime - you gotta be kidding?

Why? Do you want your 15yo to go out and rape or commit any form of sexual harassment, abuse or violence?

I can see people getting upset at other parts of the pledge, but that line? Seriously?

Are you really a Parent?

I think that the issue the OP has, is that this is what they classify as addressing the issue of rape within this country. A hollow pledge isn't going to fix the problem, a more pro-active approach is needed.

Son: "I'm sorry teacher my daddy said I can't pledge this line because he wants to keep my options open in the future"

If a hollow pledge stops 1 rape, that's good enough.

Do you really think saying aloud "I will not rape" will stop someone who is willing to rape? It's pathetic.
This is a form of pathetic coercion defeats the whole point of pledge (which is freedom to choose to pledge or not).

Spread awareness, but not through coercion

I don't see how it would though. Just seems to me as if the government really does not understand why there is such widespread rape throughout the country, if this is being used as a measure of prevention.

It might encourage someone who is not willing to rape to speak up if and when he sees something. Also if a friend or someone he knows is willing to rape he might not be willing to stand for it.

I'm not saying its a very effective way of doing it i'm just saying that even if it helps prevent 1 rape its better than nothing.

Yes - I made sure that my son had a solid understanding from an early age to be honest, be responsible, have integrity and show respect for others - perhaps this is not obvious to other parents and schools.

When I look at how parents and schools nowadays discipline kids, it is no wonder that our society became what it is.

Just travelling to school in the mornings shows this. Parents with their kids in the car will cut you off, disregard common traffic rules and then give you a big F-U with their children in the car.

There is no surprise then when (such as last week observed at Wimpy Fourways) a kid of about 8 years says "Mum, dad, you are both effen stupid" and the parents just look at each other and carry on as nothing had happened.

So yes, I am angered that the government and school-system believes that reciting a pledge and some extra DOs and DON'Ts will sort out this countries rape- and crime problem. Perhaps it is necessary for other kids, but certainly will have no relevance for mine.

If you are a parent and are involved with your kids at school, you will know that teachers are unable to enforce any discipline as parents will complain. And, although bullying is a big NO at schools, nothing really ever gets done about it. So in my opinion the root cause resides at the home and at school and a pledge and some more sex-ed will not solve this problem.

what must goverment do to stop rapes and women abuse?

It's not even the effectiveness of this that is worry, it's the way it's being done. We have a problem of rape in the country, and the best solution we have is forcing children to say they wont rape? Pathetic.

Throw out Zuma, he is a poster child for disregard towards women.
Educate the masses, educate women and liberate the women in poor households.

pledge is not the same as forcing

Yes, because going "I wont say it" will end well for the child? She'll be victimized and labelled a rapist in no time. You don't have kids, do you?
