Anti rape pledge at schools

It's not even the effectiveness of this that is worry, it's the way it's being done. We have a problem of rape in the country, and the best solution we have is forcing children to say they wont rape? Pathetic.
"forcing"

I really don't think anyone is forcing anyone's child, tell yours not to say it and if they give him problems to call you so you can go ear rape.... errr i mean give them a piece of your.... errr i mean make them understand that they're wrong.

I pledge:
- To uphold the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
- To abide by the laws of the country.
- To respect the rights of others irrespective of age, race, sex or sexual orientation.
- To report any form of wrongdoing to authorities.
- To honour the responsibilities that come with these rights and to be a good citizen.

Let's get the cabinet to pledge and uphold these, then we can worry about the school kids.

The OP has a point - the first two lines in the pledge cover that.

Why don't we have lines that cover:

Not to shoot through toilet doors
Not to drive a taxi like I own the road
Not to blow up ATMS
Not to invade homes and farms and to torture the occupants
Not to abuse public funds and assets for my own purposes

I do agree with the sentiment but it isn't the only thing going wrong.

I consider the pledge as a step towards making this country a safer place for women and children. It shouldn't end there. Children need to understand why they are making this pledge. They need to understand why rape is wrong so that they can take that knowledge into their future. It's not worth it if they're mindlessly repeating the pledge without understanding.

Seriously, one actually has to explain to kids why it's wrong these days ?

Do we sit them down and explain why murder is not cool or armed robbery is quite a bad thing ?

In the 21st century kids are supposed to be so much smarter at an earlier age - are we really supposed to believe they don't know rape is wrong?

Yes, if the number of rape videos featuring teen boys is any indication that they don't know why it's wrong.

I get that this country needs to take strong action against any form of crime and especially crimes against women and children.

I am however angered that my 15 year old kid has to pledge the following at school:

I pledge:
- To uphold the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
- To abide by the laws of the country.
- To respect the rights of others irrespective of age, race, sex or sexual orientation.
- Not to rape or commit any form of sexual harassment, abuse or violence.
- To report any form of wrongdoing to authorities.
- To honour the responsibilities that come with these rights and to be a good citizen.
Seriously? Minors are now asked to pledge that they will not rape or commit any form of crime - you gotta be kidding?

Government is the new god, and the temple is the school. So yeah, those morals need to be pledged to and followed, comrade. It's still a theocracy. Your son could turn into a rapist if it we're not for schools and government.

I heard in Kwazulu-Natal they are going to have "anti-rape" prayers.

What next... they going to teach tolerance from Mein Kampf?

One thing the Bible does not do. Is speak out against rape. In many cases it promotes it:

(Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT
Deuteronomy 22:23-24 NAB
Deuteronomy 21:10-14 NAB
Judges 5:30 NAB
Exodus 21:7-11 NLT
Numbers 31:7-18 NLT).

It even suggests killing a woman that is raped.

The irony of trying to fight the culture with one of the causes of the culture is not lost on me. Religions have made woman property for such a long time and are part of the problem. I dont think prayers are going to help at all.

Why? Do you want your 15yo to go out and rape or commit any form of sexual harassment, abuse or violence?

Good satire.

This is exactly the type of response you can expect from some people. If a parent, has reservations about the way rape is handled by the authorities, he must be a closet rape-supporter.

I don't see what the problem is. It creates awareness and highlights the seriousness of rape to kids.

The problem is that it's a forced thing. The OP's son is probably a conscientious fellow who would never rape anyone. He is part of the choir, as is the OP. Forcing him to recount such a shibboleth seems to be an invasion of individual rights and freedoms and seems counterintuitive. In other words, don't judge everyone by the same metric, and we hear one should not be judgmental all the time. Besides why does the state get a free ride to impose its morals on others? It's this type of attitude = "You see teens are raping girls. Now boys you could also be a bunch of wanna be rapists. Now pledge not to rape." If that sort of thing does not bother you, that's your personal choice, but don't expect that sort of thing not to bother anybody else. In other words, speak for yourself.

On the other hand showing videos and giving lessons about impact of RAPE and what it is, and why it's immoral would be preferable and would not be rubbishing young boys and their family/cultural/religious/social upbringing or their genes.

Well he seems to have an issue with the point referenced in particular. Who wouldn't want their kids to do that?

Oh they know it's wrong, they just either don't care or think they will get away with it.

I think there are many reasons a parent may not be happy with this pledge nonsense, and still be strongly against RAPE. He may be satisfied that his son has a good moral understanding of the issues and recounting pledges may even weaken it, since it seems parental teaching is no longer good enough as school pledges must be brought in to supplement it. The child may ask whether the other things his parents have taught him are valid or not. He may feel that the moral system promulgated by the school is not good enough or appropriate. He may feel that it is not the job of the school to promote a type of morality the way people in the past felt about school prayers and religious instruction. He may feel that he was not consulted. He may feel that his son was coerced to do this. He may feel that his rights were violated. He may feel that this is inappropriate as an intervention strategy at this time or anytime at all. Etc. Despite all of that he may be against rape.
