Howzit guys

New to this forum.

I have been with Mweb for over a year now with their 384kbps uncapped deal. Its okay for browsing (at times) but I desperately need a faster line for downloading stuff.

So i finally decided to upgrade to a 4mbps line! To my disappointment, both Mweb (current ISP I'm with) and Telkom said that the area I'm in will only support a maximum line speed of 512kb :( :( :(

Surely the Overport area in Durban should at least support 1mb lines???

Can anyone kindly advise???

Thanks!

if 512k is your max, that will be max.

unless you post your line stats, maybe they only want to give you 512k because you live far from the dslam.

or maybe your exchange only support 512k.

Hey Ahmadk, Same boat as you and stay in sherwood which is actually quite close to overport. There is the big telkom exchange in overport just up the road and around the corner from johnies rotties (next to the KFC on the corner), so one would think they would be able to handle 1mb lines - but ja you never know with these clowns.

I have actually managed to upgrade my line to the new 1 meg line for R326 pm - just waiting for them to activate it now.

If you stay close enough why not just go into the telkom exchange and speak to one of the engineers?

@hereticangel - i live quite close to a busy area and its not like im living in a technologically disadvantaged area lol! Telkom did say that my exchange only supports 512kb currently. Is there ANY way to change this?

@DCS - which isp are you with bro? Thanks for the suggestion, mayb I should actually go in to see them. Come to think of it one of my friends dad's a manager of some sort there. Gonna have a chat with him.

Telkom doesnt realise that these 'small' areas (according to them) actually have quite a large demand for adsl. They probably dont need the business anyways- making enuf ripping everyone else off!

hmmm to change maybe let everyone in area sign p for 4mb or something, to make telkom upgrade something is kind of hard :P

Lol ryt you are! Maybe i shud start recruiting ppl to petition for better lines in the area ha ha.

Question- is it worth upgrading from my 384 line to a 512 line?

yes it in sense you get 256 upload, meaning you can use voip app(ts3 in this case, uses allot of bandwidth) and play game at same time.

Lies all lies I say...

Overport exchange and all of it's dslam's working off of it is 4meg capable and actually have quite a number of 4meg service working on them. Soon their will most propably be 10meg services available when the Metro Ethernet is installed and terminated.

There is a possable explanation why you were told this...

Congestion on the Dslam's or just the one your service is working from or You are living to far from the exchange to get a constant stable 4meg connection..

But it is a blatent lie to tell you that Overport can only support up to 512k...

PM me your number if you want and I can get a bit more info regarding this for you..

imo the price gap between 384 to 512 and 384 to 4meg as for line rental, isn't worth it. but i'm guesing you want uncapped too, and then things don't add up

@SrackOverflow - anything faster than a 384 line is better but the theres a big price jump from 384 to 512 thats why i would have ideally gone for a 4mb line - pay a little more but get a way faster line. Unfortunately these telkom clowns are not providing faster than 512 in my area apparently

@Ahmadk i think you should go to a telkom shop and order it from there because they told me the same thing when i had my 384k line, and low and behold i got a 4mbs line now.

@AgentJ007 - ur joking ryt?? lol how useless are these guys at telkom?! Gonna give that a shot today. Are you with Telkom or with Mweb though? What download speeds can one expect from a 4mb line? Realistically speaking around 300kbps?

I say upgrade to 512 then once it's in call to get upgraded to 1meg. MWEB already have a 1meg uncapped package.

Not joking bro, i live in Merebank and my exchange is 3km away, and when i called the 10219 number they said that my exchange does not support it, but when i got to the telkom shop in bluff they got it for me. Yes i am with 'Hellkom'' and they are my isp as well. As well as you would pay the same rate for a 512k line and a 4mbs line if you take the special that they got with the 9gig cap.

@ Ahmadk - Check your PM's. I have sent you a few details that should help...let me know if there is anything else.
