Any foreseeable pitfalls here?

Hi,

I'm new to fibre and trying to help my elderly mom in Parkhurst, Jhb. Anything with more than 1 button or switch is a challenge :) .

1) Her laptop is currently used for emailing and some browsing. Both with a Huawei MiFi type dongle using a Telkom data contract (nearing expiry). She'd like Netflix as she will be home-bound in the medium term (imminent medical procedure).

2) She has a couple of onsite cottages and is finding increased demand for rentals including internet related services.

Ultimately, I'm thinking of suggesting a Chrome Cast for Netflix. But first & foremost her data limitations need to be addressed.

What do you guys think of this offer? What are the chances that it would come with a free router?

Cost, reliability & simplicity are the deciding factors.

I'd value inputs from whomever is in the know. TIA

There is no Openserve fibre in Parkhurst, so options will be Vumatel fibre based (even though some maps say there is). Vumatel started in Parkhurst and we were the first ISP to connect a home.

We can assist www.coolideas.co.za alternatively look at https://shop.vumatel.co.za

Point 2 is going to be a problem, if they're all sharing 1 line out someone is going to abuse it, and someone is going to complain.

Can you not ask Vumatel if they can run separate Fibre to each cottage and the tenants must get their own package and CPE?

Otherwise if it does run on one line you will need something to do proper bandwidth control. I.e if Cottage A pays R500 for 20mbps, they must ONLY get 20mbps from the 100mbps line etc. etc.

Yeap it is expected for each resident to have their own line as aggregation is not allowed. Vumatel will install multiple lines.

Just note that Vumatel will charge you for each of the lines seperatly, this is because each line will be a seperate entity with its own service.

I would suggest that each tenant do their own order if they want a fibre installation. In my opinion, it is not the landlords responsibility to provide fibre to tenants.

A premise creation will need to be requested for the cottages as the Vumatel system only caters for 1 installation per address.

Thanks so much everyone. I Vumatel is the only provider, how does one distinguish between ISP's?
  • Cost vs offering... (as advertised)
  • Service... (by reputation)
I'm guessing that reliability would be solely up to Vumatel (infrastructure, technicians). Anything else to consider because without me personally having any insights into service levels, I would look purely at price (so the below promotion from Vumatel's website would come up trumps)?

Thanks again everyone.

Well I am with Afrihost. Don't have any issues getting support.

Just a note, "free" routers can be clawed back if you cancel early. Since the router is subsidized over the period. Its free to use in that period, not free as in you can take it and cancel next month.

The best way to distinguish between ISPs is normally to go through forums like this, but also with caution as what gives person A a problem could land up working perfectly for years with person B.

Since PBCool so far are the only ones to answer your question, perhaps check their offering? :)
Cheaper is not always better either.

@neoprema Thanks for your explanation. Makes sense. Very inclined to go the Cool Ideas route. My mom is old school (no internet banking, etc). With Cool Ideas being in Rosebank, any of her issues will be easy to resolve whilst she's mobile.

Thanks again everyone. I'll chat with my mom about Cool Ideas / Vumatel.

I second CISP. Pretty "chilled" guys to deal with
