Any RELIABLE Download managers?

I decided to try IDM out over the last few days and I have to say, I am very impressed! I would actually recommend this over Flashget. This thing grabs everything, even videos on any website. Very cool!
 
I use IDM for larger downloads 2gb + and use Getright for the smaller downloads,Ah the joys of multiple browsers XD

IDM is not free (costs $25) , you get a 30 day trial.

As for resuming, usually it depends on the SERVER/SITE you are downloading from as to whether you can resume or not. So if it is from a site that have resume abilities, yes, you can basically "pause" a download, turn off your PC , and "resume" the next day.... (and yes you can turn off your laptop too, you can even schedule your downloads to pause during the day and only download during the night....very useful if you are on one of those ISP-plans that works after midnight)

IDM will tell you whether you can pause/resume a download ("resume capability") . So if the server don't have "resume capability" and your modem drops, chances are you will need to start over.

I've not really found a full-proof downloader that can mysteriously pause/resume -any- download from -any- site, there's always sites that simply don't support it and you have to re-download if your connection drops . Sometimes a downloader might resume "internally", but your final file will be corrupt anyway...

I am downloading from microsofts website, do they support resume?

Yes.

Generally, if the website supports multiple streams, it also supports resume.

Although sometimes, if they have some session ID, in the link or wherever, that session could expire after a few minutes to days.

But IDM even has a feature that can create a new session for existing links. However, that only works for sites that have resume support.
 
Best download managers, in my experience:

IDM (The best, browser integration, download from youtube in any quality (with resume support), etc)
Flashget (Best free, but doesn't let you configure the number of streams per connection, AFAIK)

Speed Download (Best for Mac)

I've never, ever had a corrupted file with the above, yet, my Internet has frequent disconnects, times of no throughput, etc.

I hear JDownload is also good and reliable.
Last time I used FDM (Free Download Manager), it was simply not reliable enough, and would corrupt the occasional file. Reliability is essential for me though, with my erratic wireless Internet, so I was very glad to move away from this.
 
I have FlashGet, im using it now, i have stoped and restarted my pc and it has not lost progress. I have a 384kbps line and its downloading at 43- 48kb/s (highest was 75kb/s for a split second).

12 Hours remaining on my download.

How do I get flashget to automatically pop up on my browser when I download anything from the Internet (websites, etc)?
 
The problem I have with most of these download managers is that you end up downloading a .php (or equivalent) file instead of the file you wanted.
I find this happens especially often with FDM.

That's because the php file fetches the file for you to download - so that you can't direct download the file. It's often done to monitor file downloads, etc.
 
Never had any problems whit Orbit it resumes even after a power cut

Hehe, same. I run Firefox to open the downthemall manager and then close Firefox again and carry on using Chrome (just copy/paste download links).
