Any tips for budget mITX gaming pc build?

I just bought a pc through wootware. Got the 1070 and i5 6600k. Playes gta on full ultra setting including AA and it only really uses about 68% of the cpu.
If i were you. I would go 1060 with a i5 on a b150 mobo and 8gig ram. You could use the cash saved to get a SSD.
For gaming an i5 is perfect i7 is more for video editing. I would even say get an i3 because games generally only use 1 core. And you still have hyperthreading incase u want to run cpu heavy apps.
I think the only downside to a budget build would be the lack of a SSD.

It's not 2003, games use more than one core. The i3 would be right for him but I would get the i5 so you know you're set for a long time, just upgrading the graphics card evey 3-4 years if you want to game at the same quality - everything max at 1080p. Or you could get a 2nd hand i5/i7 down the road.

i3 has multi-threading so you can get away with it to an extent, but an i5 will give you a lot more headroom.

Should I get a specific i5? Like for instance a 6600 instead of a 4690?

They're both different generations of processor, different socket type, requires different motherboards.
I'd recommend a 6600 with a LGA 1151 Motherboard (DDR4/3L RAM) as it is newer and uses less power.
The 4XXX series uses LGA 1150 motherboards and DDR3 Ram, not worth buying new at the moment unless the price is a good 25% off.

Don't know if it allows for fitting an optical drive, but don't think so from the specs.

Anyone done a build with one of these ? ; think they've been out for about 2 years if you look at YouTube clips .. which simply show them off, but no builds on YT. I'm interested in doing a build with one of these, so any comments .. ?

Thanks, will consider them, but am really after a mini case. There are apparently some that do cater for optical drives, but haven't looked into it / them yet.

Maximum PC, now PC Gamer, built with it in one of their editions.

Edit: You get mini-ITX cases with optical drive bays.

I would avoid buying something new that has last-gen graphics in it (especially 2GB)

You could get much better value with buying components yourself and building a system that performs well overall rather than having one with a good processor and mediocre graphics. What you want is a balanced system in terms of cpu-gpu unless you plan on upgrading in the near future.

For R13,103 you can self-build a much better system (links):

Nvidia 1060 6GB (much faster than 960)
16 GB Ram
B150M motherboard
650W Power supply
Nice Case
Samsung 120GB SSD


Your choice of CPU:
Skylake i3 (Price for system is R13,103)

Skylake i5 (Price changes to R14,653 total)

Here is a relative performance increase from the 960 compared to the 1060, you get a much better performance for only spending a little bit more.

Here's some gaming benchmarks where they compare the i3 against the i5 using a GTX 980 which is near enough to the performance of a 1060 to take at face value. (there is little to no difference in performance as most games you'll be playing are GPU-bound.)

It's cheaper than building it yourself but with a few issues:
MSI motherboard only has 2x RAM slots.
Only has 1x PCIe 16x slot.
No M.2 SSD slot.
Lower wattage power supply
Poorer-quality SSD. Samsung drive has slightly better performance than the ones evetech throw in their prebuilt systems (They last used Adata drives)
Only has 8Gb RAM.
You haven't built it yourself, where's the fun in that? :(

Reasons for getting the prebuilt system:

Evetech handily assemble it for you and check that it works before delivering it to you.
+free mouse.

(both online stores are very good and I have bought from both in the past)

Keep in mind that the i3 6100 will bottleneck a gtx 1060 at times.
 
Also note that you don't need a high wattage PSU. Skylake and Pascal run very green (no pun intended).

We have an extra non-modular PSU at home (which is actually for a server) that I will try to use but if not then I will look at a lower wattage PSU.
 
THANKS so much for everyone's help with my build project.
As soon as I am able to get all the parts and do the build I will probably post how it turned out.

There is something else I have to buy before I can do my build so I will probably do this in a years time - Give or take.
