I find it absolutely ludicrous when people complain when they are fined for breaking the law... oh horrors of horrors!
 
Speed cameras as a source of revenue collection are ridiculous indeed. As a means of law enforcement and correcting bad driving behaviour - the jury is out on that.

It's not, they are still deploying speed cameras and raking in money every day.

There was no complaining in my post, the fine was issued fairly. For me it just takes time to adjust to such extreme measures- step left step right = fine!

You make me sound like I was doing highway speeds pass the stop sign, as I said it was maybe 2-4km/h from complete stop.

Some might find such intense state regulation as a good thing, but from my observations it kills all the creativity in citizens, from the time you are born government already decided how your life will go for you, no need to hustle/think outside of the box etc. Perhaps that's why they are so open for immigrants especially from developing countries.

- Weather. Visited Toronto and Vancouver, out of the two- definitely Vancouver is the one to choose if you are not a fan of minus temperatures, however the city feels overpopulated and be prepared to have more difficulties in getting a job and also paying higher rent.

Despite all of that, would still recommend it as a good option to consider for your family.

Yip.. agree on the bold part.

People say that their kids wont have the best opportunities here, that may be the case... but they should have the drive and hunger to create opportunities.

In Canada you can get by with a menial job, if you have no ambition then its fine. Also if you get tired of your *** job serving fries you can take a break and live off the state for a bit.
It might be hard to bring up kids who can compete in a modern world in that kind of environment.

On the plus side South Africans do well there because we know how to work.
 
One strange thing, the banks still issue tjek books, and people still actually use it. :erm:

Apparantly when renting, the landlords for some reason love to take your rent via a tjek. Why they don't just use EFT I have no idea.

Ya, thats the other thing. The banking systems are in the stone age.

At my previous job we were bidding on replacing a payment system where they would fill out a form and FAX it to the bank.

Per transaction, this was in 2017.

Quite funny that there are no African countries that far behind.

Been there done that, didn't like it,
I immigrated when I was younger there,
So I do speak from experience, having seen firsthand the 1st world and all its ridiculous and insane laws. And how expensive things are there.


Like I mentioned before, some things great, the convenience of things,
The safety and security are great.

But like anywhere else, the grass is greener, due to all the s*** on it.

Nanny state laws, guess out in the sticks, where the bears and wolves roam it ain't so bad,
But then when you can't go outside for even a short time, and you have to put on enough jackets to make an astronaut blush.

So good with the bad I suppose,

I was very young when I was there and didn't get a lot of choice in the matter,
Would I have stayed if there weren't extenuating circumstances in my case,

Maybe,

I think just to get a Canadian citizenship, and then move to someplace else, like Florida, would be better.
And I know of plenty people, that do exactly that,
Slug it out for the 4 years, and then move someplace better and more pleasant.

Same in the US. When I was first there, I was wondering why they handed me deposit and cheque books for my account.

Then I saw they in quite common use

And things like outsurance style companies and decent medical aid don't exist.

Although those might apply more to USA than Canada.

I've always paid rent with ETF, even in the early 2000's. The only thing I've ever used a cheque for was to pay a building contractor who was a bit old school.

Many insurance companies offer "no claim bonuses", and I'm quite happy with my medical aid (which covers medical, dental and vision).

In South Africa we call them cheques.

:p

tjek = Afrikaans for cheque
