Apple announces iPhone 4

Alot of stuff seems to be happening on the 21st.... too bad i'll be flying to Jozi so i'll miss everything :(
 
Wonder what they left out to be improved upon for next year's version? As far as I can see they have caught up with everyone else tech-wise.
 
Now we just have to see how long before Vodacom decides to actually acknowledge this new phone...

Lol, its going to be ALOT more expensive than the Desire and the Desire will still have more features and be faster. Apple market themselves very well...
 
To be honest, I've just got myself a Sony X10 because my Iphone 3g was getting long in the tooth, and there are already things on the X10 that are driving me nuts because my iphone simply does them better.
 
Looks incredible. Might ditch my Blackberry for this(8900) but no more BBM is gonna hurt my social life more than a case of herpes. Any news on say iChat for this?

Not really a lot more, and it actually has more features than the Desire and is faster.

The silence on iChat functionality, tethering, and support for anything beyond 3.5G was deafening.

I'm fairly sure that's coupled with a neat little contract from AT&T. So without that subsidy I'm sure it'll be around the R10K+ mark, call it R12K and you're paying for 2 Desire's. Not worth it in the least.

While the Retina display is something, I'm not convinced that it's that big a deal for a 3.5" display. The tech is great, don't get me wrong, but are you really going to notice the difference?

Caught up? Maybe. I'll grant that they seem to have covered most of their bases, but no home runs this time. How long before others surpass them, I wonder? HTC already has the Evo4G, which I'd much rather have than an iPhone 4.

1GHz processors in both. A4 might benchmark more. As for the price, see above. If you don't believe it, go check how much a 3GS costs new vs the Desire. Should be around R9K vs R6K - that's a difference of a third of the price of the 3GS or half the price of the Desire, i.e. a lot.

A Desire goes for between R6k and R7.5k (if you buy locally) whereas a new iPhone will go for R10k+ if current pricing is anything to go by. I'll concede the point on more features based on the fact that South African iPhone users have access to paid apps in the app store whereas Android users don't have access to paid apps in the Market.

Where do you get your information that the iPhone 4 will be faster than the Desire? If you're referring to the AnandTech benchmark, it wasn't really a conclusive test.

From what I've read US iPhone users were really hoping that tethering would become a standard feature (like it is elsewhere in the world). In SA it's not a problem.

None yet. Only the countries in the first batch (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland) were announced. They'll be getting it at the end of July. There'll be two more batches: 24 more countries by the end of August and 40 more countries by the end of September. There hasn't been any information about where South Africa falls in that schedule yet.

P.S. Don't complain that this is old news tomorrow. We'll probably be including this information in a write-up. :P
 
iPhone 3GS is around R9k yep, but if you are in Cape Town I will get you a brand new one sealed in the box for R5600, and yes it is local stock with the ICASA sticker. Its ridiculous what people have to pay for these. They are the 16GB White 3GS left at that price :)
 
This really looks awesome - lots of features that I've been waiting for in the iPhone (multitasking). Pity it would be ridiculously expensive and I'm really used to not having to worry about data (downloaded about 300 MB today on my BlackBerry on podcasts).
