Apple announces iPhone 4

Time for Apple to get into South Africa. Not Core IT. Some other carrier as well should sell it. Features are great though better casing, has new sensor, a gyroscope! ...for way better motion sensing...eish. gone from 3 megapixel to 5 megapixel, using a backside illuminated sensor. #wwdc

I want what you're smoking. They've got less than 10% of the PC market, probably less than 2% of the business PC market and about 1% of the cell phone market. They aren't going to become any trouble, any time soon.

Just like twitter and facebook, it's mostly hype. But of course journalists don't see things from the point of view of the man in the street. Not all of us need a new iPhone or Mac. To me (and 95% of the world) they're just shiny crap. Because I don't spend most of my day driving from press junket to press junket, I use a 24" screen to read my emails, a landline to make my calls, a quad core chip to render my 3D models and a 40" TV to watch my [-]pirated series[/-] creative commons content. Why would I (and 95% of the world) switch to a tiny screened, underpowered, overpriced iPhone, with cell phone call quality instead of what I've got now? Only if I need portability (like a journalist) , and I don't.

One thing that they are offering there however is where any iphone owner with six months or less left on their AT&T contract can upgrade without penalty. I'd love to see that situation here.

BTW - their contracts are pretty reasonable - at least compared to ours. :o
 
Looking at the features of the iPhone 4 it is a mix of breaking records and trying to catch up, the latter the predominate factor.

What is awesome about it is the display, IPS 960x640 is great. Bit of a weird aspect ratio though. Sadly that is where it ends since it still has the flowing problems :
  • No memory card slot
  • 5 megapixel is so 2008.
  • Video calling over WiFi only? Get real!
  • No FM Radio? Is that still possible?
  • No J2ME? Are you sure its a phone?
  • MicroSIM - like those few milimeters is going to help.
  • TV-out - with a display like why is there no HDMI? Waiting for Nokia to do it first on the N8?

That is only what is wrong with the iPhone4 if you look at its spec sheet, once you start comparing it to battle hardened and upcoming phone the list of NGE points just grow.

uh you cleary dont have an iphone. assisted GPS is "ASSISTED". Its still has a proper multi channel GPS chip just like a Garmin but it is "assisted" by GSM triangulation for quicker lock in. The GSM network is not used for navigation just to speed up the initial "find me" positioning.

Personally I think 960 x 640 is quite retarded. 3:2 is a terrible screen ratio is these days of widescreen (16:9) media. Waste of screen space and battery. The only reason they did it is so they could scale their apps up, because otherwise there would be almost zero working apps for the iPhone 4, and the (number of apps on the) app store is the best thing Apple has going for them.

Outside of watching video when is it a waste?
 
Not interested in the iPhone 4, I had a 3G - got bored of it, without jailbreaking it is just a toy.

Got my new HTC Desire recently - fantastic! O yeah, on some web pages, I can view the Flash movies in the page itself, no need to use the Youtube app. And this is still on Android 2.1 - wait till we get Froyo! :-)

Ever tried downloading large files off the net with your iPhone? Doesn't work. I downloaded a demo app the other day on my Desire - all 49.5MB of it without a hitch. Try that on the iPhone :-)

Apple still aint got no Flash :-), who knows when HTML5 will be ready to offer the same functionality as Flash?
 
The best option is probably to import as the price is going to be ridiculous if we have to buy it locally. I would like to give it a try, although I have my reservations as to the ease of answering emails and sending SMS's as there is no proper keyboard. I still like my Nokia E90 and even though it may be a bit big really addresses all my issues relating to answering emails etc.

I have dabbled with phones other than Nokia and have been disappointed every time.

960x640 = 320ppi pixel density, and there is some debate as to whether the human eye can even see that level of detail. General consensus is no. It will be better than the current iPhone resolution, but it's like having 64-bit color depth. What's the point is you cannot see over 24-bit, especially if the hardware uses extra resources? It was less a case of choosing the optimal resolution for a phone and more trying to not loose the advantage they have from the app store.
 
zOMG! Video call over Wi-fi - that will never be not-funny. The more I think of it the more I laugh :D

I think Steve also feels that was a dumb move. The only reason he is side stepping doing it over 3G is because he is afraid a ton of lawsuits will land on him because SE/Nokia/Samsung/LG/Qualcomm did it first.

I'm not talking about screen resolution and the human eye. You said having 3:2 instead of 16:9 is a waste of screen space and I'm curious as to why. For photographers 3:2 is a perfect resolution, for reading books the wider aspect ratio will feel more familiar, having a bigger map on my GPS is better, for browsing bigger is better. What I asked is why 3:2 is a "retarded" choice if you discount watching video.

Video over 3G is already available on the iphone via skype. This sounds more like the concerns of the network operators especially ones with uncapped data plans. I can see Vodacom welcoming it with open arms considering how much data it will chow.

June 21st according to one of the keynote slides. And it will be free for all iPhones and iPod touches.
 
BlackBerry + iPod Touch (or iPad) = best. As a communications device the BlackBerry remains unbeatable imo. The iPod Touch (or iPad) is for all that other stuff (apps, etc). I use this BB/iPod combo and it works great.
 
I need to get my hands on one on these. I skipped the 3G and 3GS, all in anticipation of this beast! :) How am I going to justify spending a trillion bucks on this!!!

Does it really work that well? Is it not an effort carting both devices around where ever you go? I also considered this setup.
